{"id":91023,"date":"2026-01-19T20:04:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T20:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/91023\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T20:04:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T20:04:07","slug":"baaahd-girls-finish-3rd-in-sheep-to-shawl-competition-at-pa-farm-show-pottsville-republican-herald","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/91023\/","title":{"rendered":"BAAAhd Girls finish 3rd in Sheep to Shawl competition at PA Farm Show \u2013 Pottsville Republican Herald"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SCHUYLKILL HAVEN \u2014 The BAAAhd Girls finished third of 10 teams in the Sheep to Shawl competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to place third in the overall competition,\u201d said Lorraine Felker, president of the Fiber Arts Guild at Walk In Art Center. \u201cWe\u2019re especially honored to have received the Team Choice Award, which is chosen by other participants in the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the second year in a row that the BAAAhd Girls finished third in the Sheep to Shawl competition. This year, a record 10 teams participated.<\/p>\n<p>The SchuylkillGurlz, an a capella group based at the art center, brought the Small Arena to silence as they opened the competition with \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sent chills down your back and brought tears to my eyes,\u201d said Kim Morgan, a spinner.<\/p>\n<p>The competition theme was America the Beautiful, chosen in honor of the nation\u2019s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The BAAAhd Girls patterned their shawl after the \u201cpurple mountains majesty\u201d line in the anthem, written by Katherine Lee Bates. A companion group, The BAAAhd Company, entered a shawl inspired by its \u201camber waves of grain\u201d sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>The competition was intense for teams, who had 2 \u00bd hours to make 78-by-22 inch shawls from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompeting at the farm show was like facing your good friend in a boxing ring,\u201d said Margi Wright, a BAAAhd Girls spinner, who had friends of opposing teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love seeing them and sharing hugs and prayers, but when the bell rings, I want to win,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m always exhausted afterward, between the physical and emotional struggle I feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The competition was the hardest Wright had experienced in the five years she\u2019s participated in Sheep to Shawl.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"The BAAAhd Company competes at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. (SUBMITTED)<\/p>\n<p>For weaver Kris Amey, competing at the farm show was an \u201cunforgettable thrill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cheerful buzzing atmosphere of the crowd made every moment enjoyable,\u201d Amey said, but facing cameras challenged her ability to concentrate and stay focused.<\/p>\n<p>The BAAAhd Company experienced a glitch when its spinning wheel broke late in the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt did slow us down,\u201d said spinner Hana Vojtechova, \u201cbut we finished and turned our shawl in on time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weaver Alice Gillespie, who competed in Sheep to Shawl 40 years ago, said the team pulled together to finish on time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll members of our team,\u201d she said, \u201chandled the extra stress with grace and skill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felker, a spinner with The BAAAhd Girls, said competing at the farm show is always a bit daunting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to all our public demonstrations in the past year,\u201d she said, \u201cwe shifted into automatic pilot, blocked out the crowds and cameras and did out task as best we could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both teams are already discussing their approach to next year\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n<p>A Fiber Arts Festival is scheduled for Feb. 21-22 at Walk In Art Center, 220 Parkway, Schuylkill Haven.
