{"id":91603,"date":"2026-01-20T13:16:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T13:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/91603\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T13:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T13:16:11","slug":"take-a-winter-hike-on-these-lehigh-valley-trails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/91603\/","title":{"rendered":"Take a winter hike on these Lehigh Valley trails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wildlands Conservancy Preserve Manager Michael Hock loves a quiet, snowy hike where he can see streams frozen over into unique ice formations and enjoy scenic views looking down over the Lehigh Valley.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d also like to explore winter hiking, Hock offered his top three recommendations for getting outside this season, along with advice for staying safe and warm.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to research your route ahead of time, know your limits and watch out for changing weather conditions, Hock said.<\/p>\n<p>Hikers should wear warm base layers and layer up with jackets, hats and gloves, Hock said, adding that wool socks are a good example of clothing built for being active in the cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything that helps keep moisture away from your body, keeps you dry while hiking is really, really important this time of year,\u201d Hock said, \u201cso dress appropriately and think about those conditions to stay warm yet dry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at the Wildlands Conservancy recommended winter hikes:<\/p>\n<p>South Mountain Preserve<\/p>\n<p>Parking location: 554 Alpine St, Emmaus, PA 18049<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlandspa.org\/preserve\/south-mountain-preserve\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">440-acre preserve<\/a> has 12.5 miles of interconnected loop trails near both Allentown and Emmaus.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors must take a steep, rocky trail up to the top of the mountain before branching off, making this spot most appropriate for experienced hikers.<\/p>\n<p>Explorers of this preserve can enjoy scenic stream crossings and access remote locations deep in the woods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can really feel like there\u2019s nobody around you, which is an interesting experience in the Lehigh Valley,\u201d Hock said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Sharon Carpenito gets her hiking poles ready before joining the other members of Lehigh Valley Women of Adventure on a hike Sunday, March 5, 2023, at the Wildlands Conservancy South Mountain Preserve in Emmaus. (Amy Shortell\/The Morning Call)<\/p>\n<p>Black River Sanctuary<\/p>\n<p>Parking location: 3390 Church Rd, Bethlehem, PA 18015<\/p>\n<p>Allentown and Bethlehem residents have easy access to the 3.5 miles of trails in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlandspa.org\/exploreblackriver\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">187-acre preserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Those approaching the trails from the Church Road parking lot can access a more mild incline that creates a hike of intermediate difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>Wildlife, including deer, turkey, fox, coyote and songbirds, frequent this preserve. (April Gamiz\/The Morning Call)<\/p>\n<p>Brenner-Penfield Macungie Mountain Preserve<\/p>\n<p>Parking location: 6691 Sweetwood Dr, Macungie, PA 18062<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlandspa.org\/preserve\/brenner-penfield-macungie-mountain-preserve\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">57-acre preserve<\/a> is adjacent to the 11-acre Reimert Memorial Bird Haven. Between the two, visitors can access 2 miles of trail that offer intermediate to difficult hiking.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlandspa.org\/preserve\/reimert-memorial-bird-haven\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bird haven<\/a> is aptly named and is a hotspot for local bird watchers, Hock said.<\/p>\n<p>Hikers can ascend to the popular Sheep Rock overlook. In the winter time, there\u2019s a cool view through the trees of the surrounding landscape, including Macungie, Allentown and Trexlertown, Hock said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a nice view,\u201d Hock said, \u201ckind of quiet up there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A.M. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/elibrary.dcnr.pa.gov\/GetDocument?docId=1737618&amp;DocName=JACO_ParkGuide.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">18 miles of trails<\/a> are open to mountain bikers, horseback riders, cross-country skiers and snowshoers in addition to hikers.<\/p>\n<p>Trails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/dcnr\/recreation\/where-to-go\/state-parks\/find-a-park\/jacobsburg-environmental-education-center\/hiking\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">range in difficulty<\/a> from easy to more difficult with distances spanning just under a mile to nearly 5 miles.<\/p>\n<p>The site also has a visitor center open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Tim Schneider of Whitehall Township navigates melting ice Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, on the Henry's Woods Trail at Jacobsburg state park in Bushkill Township. Schnecksville, Pennsylvania 18078<\/p>\n<p>The 1495 acres of this Lehigh County nature preserve offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighcounty.org\/Portals\/0\/generalImages\/Parks\/Trexler%20Brochure%20PROOF_COUNTYOFLEHIGH%202019.pdf?ver=2019-06-10-091159-157\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 20 miles of trail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Options range from a 1.2-mile Covered Bridge Trail that meets accessibility standards to a challenging 8.5-mile hike around the preserve\u2019s perimeter.<\/p>\n<p>Cross-country skiers and snowshoers can also enjoy the preserve\u2019s trails and utilize the open areas on the North and Central Ranges.
