ERIE \u2014 When a player like Erie\u2019s Garrett Owen enters a program, it\u2019s hard not to witness the effect he can have on the teammates around him.<\/p>\n

High school basketball fans need look no further than Tuesday\u2019s home game for the Tigers, when Owen lifted his team to a 55-37 victory over Mead with the 21 points that he was able to score from all over the floor.<\/p>\n

His aggression in the paint helped him sink eight free throws in the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they take away my drive, I could go in the post and score,\u201d Owen, a 6\u20133 senior, said. \u201cIf they take away my post, I could shoot. If they take away everything else, then, I mean, I\u2019ll pass it. I think it\u2019s just the ability to score at all three levels and then also rebound at a high level.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you ask his head coach Jeff Parriott, he\u2019ll say that Owen means a bit more to the team than the simple number on the scoreboard. That, too, has been impressive, as Owen entered Tuesday\u2019s game averaging 18.8 points per game.<\/p>\n

He transferred from Belleview Christian ahead of last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s really grown as a player for us,\u201d Parriott said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had him for a year and a half, and I think he\u2019s matured defensively. He\u2019s matured as a leader. He really stepped up in terms of leadership in our group. He\u2019s been really consistent offensively for us. He\u2019s (had) 19 points nearly every night and we\u2019ve needed that. Sometimes we struggle to score and we need his consistency on the offensive end.\u201d<\/p>\n

His passion for the game, Parriott said, has been contagious for all the boys around him. In the first quarter alone, Owen scored nine of the Tigers\u2019 15 points, then he spent the rest of the game helping to drive the offense around him.<\/p>\n

In the huddles, he tries to inspire his team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just getting on guys when they need to do better, but it\u2019s coming from a good heart,\u201d Owen said. \u201cWhen I get on them, they know that it\u2019s from a good place and they know I\u2019m not doing it in a bad way. I think I\u2019m more of a lead by example guy more than anything. I want to go out there and put 110% effort on the floor at all times, so I just want all our guys to follow that.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, it seems to be paying off. The Tigers improved to 7-4 with the victory, and will next host Loveland on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
