{"id":92414,"date":"2026-01-21T09:07:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T09:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/92414\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T09:07:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T09:07:19","slug":"philadelphia-art-museum-parts-ways-with-paul-dien-the-marketing-executive-who-oversaw-the-controversial-rebrand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/92414\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia Art Museum parts ways with Paul Dien, the marketing executive who oversaw the controversial rebrand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/philadelphia-art-museum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Art Museum<\/a> has parted ways with the marketing executive who oversaw the museum\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/philadelphia-art-museum-rebrand-logo-griffin-20251103.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/philadelphia-art-museum-rebrand-logo-griffin-20251103.html\">controversial rebranding campaign<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Paul Dien, the chief marketing officer hired by <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/sasha-suda-philadelphia-museum-of-art-20251104.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/sasha-suda-philadelphia-museum-of-art-20251104.html\">former museum director and CEO Sasha Suda<\/a> in 2023, has resigned effective Feb. 1, the museum confirmed Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Dien has accepted a consulting opportunity and was not available for an interview on Tuesday. The museum had no further details to share, a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The change is the first in the senior executive team since veteran museum and nonprofit leader Daniel H. Weiss <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/philadelphia-art-museum-new-ceo-director-daniel-weiss-20251121.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/philadelphia-art-museum-new-ceo-director-daniel-weiss-20251121.html\">was brought in as director and CEO<\/a> about eight weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The museum is currently mulling whether to keep or alter the rebrand, Weiss said in a recent interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/press.philamuseum.org\/the-philadelphia-museum-of-art-welcomes--two-new-members-to-its-senior-leadership-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/press.philamuseum.org\/the-philadelphia-museum-of-art-welcomes--two-new-members-to-its-senior-leadership-team\/\">Dien<\/a>, who was previously vice president of advancement and partnerships at the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/grammymuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/grammymuseum.org\/\">Grammy Museum<\/a> in Los Angeles, oversaw the Art Museum\u2019s name change and new visual identity. He and Suda had hoped the museum\u2019s rebrand would revive sagging attendance after its unveiling in early October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s going to bring people in and help put us more clearly on the map,\u201d Suda said at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWe have so much research that shows there is this brand perception that we\u2019re the castle on the hill,\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/philadelphia-art-museum-modern-rebrand-name-20251008.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/philadelphia-art-museum-modern-rebrand-name-20251008.html\">Dien said last November<\/a>, during the rebrand\u2019s rollout. \u201cAnd so my job right now is [to ask], \u2018How do we come down the steps and meet people where they\u2019re at?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But the campaign was widely \u2014 though not universally \u2014 mocked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/1048843\/people-really-hate-the-philadelphia-art-museum-rebrand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hyperallergic<\/a> story carried the headline: \u201cPeople Really Hate the Philadelphia Art Museum Rebrand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A review in trade blog<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.underconsideration.com\/brandnew\/archives\/new_logo_and_identity_for_philadelphia_art_museum_by_gretel.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Brand New<\/a> praised the rebrand, saying that it infused the museum with a \u201cmuch needed, new, distinct, and energetic identity that was sorely missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The rebrand, designed by Brooklyn-based branding and design firm Gretel, came with a name change for the institution, from Philadelphia Museum of Art to Philadelphia Art Museum, as well as a shorthand moniker \u2014 PhAM, which the museum has used for its new web address, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitpham.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.visitpham.org\/\">visitpham.org<\/a>, and in some marketing materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">That drew an unfortunate joke moniker from wags \u2014 PhArt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWe are an amazing museum with an amazing collection, amazing curators, and an amazing experience, and it\u2019s really a shame, the jokes and<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.34st.com\/article\/2025\/10\/pham-art-museum-rebrand-philadelphia-rebrand-design-tradition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> negative reaction<\/a> to the rebranding,\u201d said museum trustee Yoram (Jerry) Wind a few weeks after the rebrand was introduced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Another board member, Jennifer Rice, expressed support for it shortly after its launch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI do like it. I love the tagline \u2018Wall to Wall Art for All.\u2019 I like that it feels fresh and feels new and feels like it would connect with the audience we\u2019ve had trouble connecting with,\u201d Rice said <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Some critics complained that a new logo inspired by the griffin figures adorning the building\u2019s roofline looked less like that of an art museum and more reminiscent of a beer label or soccer team emblem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The rebrand, including the name change, new logo, and bolder graphics, also comprises a series of punchy taglines, like \u201cMade You Look\u201d and \u201cRevolutionary Since 1876.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Weiss has set up a task force of board and staff to evaluate the rebranding to \u201ctake a look at how it\u2019s playing, what works, what doesn\u2019t work, to do some analytical work around that and get a sense of how our various constituencies are perceiving it, recognizing that almost any rebrand is controversial at first,\u201d he said. \u201cThe question is whether we\u2019re in the territory of a rebrand that is counterproductive to our ambition or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Their findings will be presented to the board for discussion on whether \u201cwe stay as it is now or make changes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Suda was <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/sasha-suda-philadelphia-museum-of-art-20251104.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/sasha-suda-philadelphia-museum-of-art-20251104.html\">ousted<\/a> as director and CEO in November, three years into her five-year contract.
