{"id":93054,"date":"2026-01-21T23:55:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T23:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/93054\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T23:55:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T23:55:11","slug":"nearly-53-million-going-toward-freight-infrastructure-improvement-projects-in-pennsylvania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/93054\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly $53 million going toward freight infrastructure improvement projects in Pennsylvania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Nearly $53 million will fund projects designed to improve infrastructure and economic development in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said it is funding 30 projects that are designed to improve freight mobility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Local projects include: <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\"> Allegheny County: <\/p>\n<p>Allegheny Valley Railroad: $2.1 million to replace 1.3 miles of jointed rail with new 136 lb. rail on the Allegheny Subdivision.Union Railroad: $700,000 to replace ties within seven tracks within the Ore Yard and four tracks on the Joe Wolf Yard. MetalTech: $840,000 to replace approximately 2,000 feet of rail and rebuild a 250-foot concrete-embedded grade crossing at its metals processing facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Armstrong, Butler, Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, Lawrence, and McKean Counties: <\/p>\n<p>Buffalo &amp; Pittsburgh Railroad: $4 million to improve 218 miles of the Main Line and P&amp;W Subdivisions through replacements of 40 grade crossings, 80,000 feet of rail, 30,000 ties, and surfacing 48 miles of track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Butler, Cameron, and Elk Counties:<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburg &amp; Shawmut Railroad: $3.1 million to rehabilitate approximately 20 miles of track on the Laurel Subdivision, an additional 6 miles of track, install two switch machines and improve a grade crossing in the Butler Yard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Washington County:<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh &amp; Ohio Central Railroad: $1.1 million to construct approximately 4,800 feet of new track in the Scully Yard and rehabilitate 10,560 linear feet of track on the Arden Subdivision.Wheeling &amp; Lake Erie Railway: $5.9 million to rehabilitate three rail bridges located on the Pittsburgh and Rook subdivisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Westmoreland County: <\/p>\n<p>Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad: $3.24 million to rehabilitate 3 miles of rail, replacing jointed rail on the Radebaugh Subdivision with welded rail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Funding comes from the Rail Transportation Assistance Program (RTAP) and the Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP).<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cPennsylvania\u2019s rail freight network supports family-sustaining jobs and connects Pennsylvania communities to the global economy while bolstering local economic development,\u201d said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. \u201cThese investments to expand and improve the network will create opportunities for generations of Pennsylvanians to come.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Officials expect the new projects to create 450 jobs in the Commonwealth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/penndot\/programs-and-doing-business\/rail-freight-ports\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/penndot\/programs-and-doing-business\/rail-freight-ports\">Click here to learn more about Pennsylvania rail grant programs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpxi.com\/mobile-apps\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FREE WPXI News app<\/a> for breaking news alerts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Follow Channel 11 News on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/wpxi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WPXI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a>. | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpxi.com\/video\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Watch WPXI NOW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>TOP STORIES FROM CHANNEL 11 NEWS <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph body-copyright\">\u00a92026 Cox Media Group<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nearly $53 million will fund projects designed to improve infrastructure and economic development in Pennsylvania.
