Projects addressing traffic safety along a busy intersection in Dickson City and streetscape work in Pittston are among 13 throughout Lackawanna and Luzerne counties approved for a total of more than $5.4 million in Commonwealth Financing Authority\u00a0Multimodal Transportation Fund grants.<\/p>\n

State Sens. Marty Flynn, D-22, Dunmore, and Jim Haddock, D-118, Pittston Twp., announced the grants.<\/p>\n

Dickson City borough \u2014 on behalf of Lackawanna Executive Park Dickson LLC \u2014 will receive $450,000 for roadway safety improvements to the intersection of Main Street and Viewmont Drive.<\/p>\n

The work will include a longer turning lane in order for traffic to flow smoother through that intersection, borough Manager Cesare Forconi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully it\u2019s going to alleviate some of the congestion that happens there,\u201d Forconi said. \u201cThe intersection has a lot more traffic than I think anybody anticipated.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nLackawanna County<\/p>\n

Other recipients throughout Lackawanna County slated to include grant funding include:<\/p>\n

GLI Moosic LLC: $900,000 for roadway improvements at the intersection of Birney and Springbrook avenues to support local development of a gas station\/convenience store in Moosic.<\/p>\n

Lackawanna County: $850,000 for roadway and pedestrian infrastructure improvements to North Main Avenue and Green Ridge Street.<\/p>\n

Taylor borough: $450,000 for replacement of sidewalks, curbs and street lighting along Main and Union streets.<\/p>\n

South Abington Twp.: $400,000 to improve West Grove Street and pedestrian access at Abington Heights High School.<\/p>\n

717\u2013719 Capouse Avenue LLC: $250,000 for sidewalk, curbing, lighting and landscaping improvements along Capouse Avenue in Scranton.<\/p>\n

Glenburn Twp.: $250,000 for streetscape improvements to the roadway and sidewalk along South Waterford Road.<\/p>\n

Scranton: $250,000 for sidewalk and streetscape improvements along Penn and Capouse avenues.<\/p>\n

Luzerne County<\/p>\n

The city of Pittston will be awarded $100,000 for streetscape improvements on Plank Street.<\/p>\n

Although the city received only a fraction of the anticipated project cost of more than $1 million, Mayor Mike Lombardo noted the money will allow officials to start moving forward with a plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll either hold it and then reapply for some more money, but begin some design work now, or there are some retaining walls that need to be fixed,\u201d Lombardo said. \u201cSome of the properties on Plank Street sit elevated up on a hill and historically we\u2019ve repaired some of those in the streetscape (projects). We will be seeking some additional funding, but we\u2019re excited and happy about it. We\u2019ve been very fortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other municipalities in Luzerne County to set receive grant funding include:<\/p>\n

Wilkes-Barre: $500,000 for streetscape improvements along North Main Street.<\/p>\n

Pittston Twp.: $476,600 to make pavement improvements to multiple township roads.<\/p>\n

Wilkes-Barre: $300,000 for streetscape improvements along South Main Street.<\/p>\n
