Springfield, Massachusetts is celebrated as the birthplace of basketball, but Philly is where the sport\u2019s first professional league tipped off, and that will be the next \u201cfirst\u201d celebrated this weekend as part of the Philadelphia Historic District\u2019s \u201c52 Weeks of Firsts.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 1898, the National Basketball League<\/a> was created and the first game between the Hancock Athletic Association and the Trenton Nationals took place soon after in Kensington. This came seven years after Dr. James Naismith came up with the original 13 rules for the new indoor sport<\/a>, and over 50 years before today\u2019s National Basketball Association was formed<\/a>, in a merger between the Basketball Association of America and a future iteration of the NBL \u2014 the first one folded by 1904, with no Philly team ever winning it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mechanics of the game have changed. We no longer use peach baskets, there\u2019s no longer wire cages, but the grit and the passion are still there,\u201d said Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson, Vice President of Civic Affairs for the Philadelphia 76ers.<\/p>\n

Before the Sixers take on the New York Knicks at 3 p.m. Saturday, the organization will host the next of the Historic District\u2019s Saturday \u201cFirstival\u201d series at the Xfinity Mobile Arena from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free public event is part of a series that kick off each \u201cfirst\u2019 week, with storytelling from Historic Philly\u2019s Once Upon a Nation<\/a> and activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Previous \u201cfirsts\u201d so far have been the first successful balloon flight in America, the<\/a> Mummers Parade as the nation\u2019s first folk parade<\/a>, and the nation\u2019s first volunteer fire company<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Each \u201cfirst\u201d also has its own No. 1 statue, painted by 25 local artists<\/a> selected by Mural Arts Philadelphia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Artist Daniel Lipchutz<\/a> was assigned the first basketball league statue, as well as two others. He said this week\u2019s project stirred up a lot for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to be a basketball player before I ever dreamed of being an artist. So it\u2019s really helping me tap back into my inner child,\u201d Lipchutz said. \u201cTo be able to make a living as an artist in a city that supports that is really special and something I don\u2019t take for granted, and to be able to now weave that back into sports and community in a way, that\u2019s really impactful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 5-feet-tall, high-density foam statues are all around the city \u2014 near the site of their respective \u201cfirstival\u201d \u2014 and have an accompanying photo competition through the \u201c52 Weeks of Firsts\u201d Instagram account<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Next week, the Xfinity Mobile Arena will host two back-to-back games of Unrivaled Basketball<\/a>, the popular 3v3 professional women\u2019s league. For Philly basketball fans this offers a sample of what\u2019s to come in 2030 when Philly gets a WNBA franchise<\/a>, co-owned by Sixers ownership group.<\/p>\n

Corbin-Johnson said the Sixers are proud to help celebrate Philadelphia\u2019s role in basketball history this year, while it prepares to help add to it in the coming years.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have always said Philadelphia is a sports city and I think this goes to show, with the NBL being created here to now getting a women\u2019s sports team to come, we\u2019re looking forward to the future of basketball. It\u2019s going to be even brighter,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
