READING, Pa. \u2013 On a normal snow day in Reading, residents and business owners are still responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks.<\/p>\n
Downtown properties have two hours after the snow stops to clear sidewalks.\u2028Most other areas have four hours.<\/p>\n
If sidewalks are not cleared in time, property owners could face a fine.<\/p>\n
For business owners like Salvatore Esposito at Ray\u2019s #1 Pizza, preparation is already underway.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy responsibility is the frontage,\u201d Esposito said. \u201cI\u2019ve got to make sure it\u2019s all nice and de-snowed \u2014 remove the snow and ice out, put the salt down for people, make sure that the trash cans are accessible for the tenants that live upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n
If a snow emergency is declared, the rules change.<\/p>\n
Drivers would have four hours to move vehicles off designated snow emergency routes, or risk being ticketed or towed.<\/p>\n
During a snow emergency, city parking garages would be free to use.<\/p>\n
New Reading residents are also preparing. Escarling Zarrilla moved from the Dominican Republic about a year ago and recently opened D\u2019Lola Liquidation in the downtown area.<\/p>\n
\u201cEach business owner is responsible for keeping their area clean,\u201d Zarrilla said. \u201cWe spread salt at night so it\u2019s easier to remove the snow the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n
City officials say they are still evaluating conditions and have not yet declared a snow emergency.
