The new Canadian show \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d has taken American culture by storm, highlighting the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation in film and media.<\/p>\n
Released in late 2025, \u201cHeated Rivalry<\/a>\u201d has made its mark on American<\/a>, Canadian<\/a> and even Russian<\/a> media. The show, based on the Canadian book series<\/a> by Rachel Reid, follows the fictional years-long romance between professional hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. \u201cHeated Rivalry\u2019s\u201d success hinges on many factors, including its dramatic romance<\/a>, attractive actors<\/a> and, perhaps most distinctively, its representation<\/a> of a LGBTQIA+ happy ending.\u00a0<\/p>\n John Musser, an associate professor in the department of gender studies and women studies, said \u2014 as a millennial \u2014 when he was growing up<\/a>, media representation of LGBTQIA+ characters was rare. When there were queer characters on screen, they would frequently follow similar storylines<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was no cultural text that was as centering of gay characters as \u2018Heated Rivalry,\u2019\u201d Musser said. \u201cIf there were popular cultural texts that did have gay characters, particularly gay men, they would follow certain narrative tropes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n It\u2019s common for LGBTQIA+ characters in the media to live tragic lives<\/a>, especially when Musser was watching television while coming of age. He referenced the 2005 film \u201cBrokeback Mountain<\/a>\u201d and the 1994 musical \u201cRent<\/a>\u201d as two popular performances with queer representation \u2014 but that also had gay characters whose deaths were implicitly tied to their sexualities. This trope can send a message to young gay men that they would follow that same path, according to Musser.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThat suggests something culturally, about our cultural attitudes towards queer sexuality or gay people\u2019s lives,\u201d Musser said. \u201cWhat is the destiny presented to me as a young person? Well, in our media landscape, it would have seemed to be \u2018you\u2019re going to get AIDS and die,\u2019 or \u2018you\u2019re going to get gay bashed and die.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cHeated Rivalry,\u201d then, offers a new idea for LGBTQIA+ characters on screen by working to break stereotypes, according to Musser.<\/p>\n \u201cBroadly in the context of how gay stories \u2014 particularly surrounding gay men \u2014 have been told, you get the sissy who doesn\u2019t fit in. You get the very legibly gay person who\u2019s struggling to fit in high school or something like that,\u201d Musser said. \u201c\u2018Heated Rivalry\u2019 is showing us a very different<\/a> framework for gay identity that we don\u2019t hear a lot of.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Sharon Li, a senior biology and creative writing major and vice president of the AQUARIAS<\/a>, said \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d is particularly noteworthy because of its widespread and diverse audience<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018Heated Rivalry\u2019 is also popular with straight people<\/a> who might have had a previous idea of what a gay relationship looked like,\u201d Li said. \u201c\u2018Heated Rivalry\u2019 is able to expand their world view on what it could look like. I think that\u2019s what makes it so significant.\u201d<\/p>\n Yeshua Biu, a first-year neuroscience student, said contemporary queer media can often feel inauthentic by not \u201cactually addressing\u201d identity issues LGBTQIA+ community members might face. But, for Biu, \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d is different.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThe show itself felt like a comfort,\u201d Biu said. \u201cThe sixth episode<\/a>, where Shane was able to come out to his mom, was definitely something that I wanted. And just seeing that, and being able to watch it \u2014 also kind of wish[ing] that I\u2019ve had that experience \u2014 was something that\u2019s just in a way comforting. But in one way, it\u2019s also a little bit gut wrenching.\u201d<\/p>\n Musser said \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d is able to encapsulate many realities of being queer, tackling hard challenges like coming out and comfortability.<\/p>\n \u201c[\u2018Heated Rivalry\u2019] is forward thinking and also connected to some of the realities of gay life, particularly about the closet and the pain of secrecy and the challenges surrounding intimacy,\u201d Musser said. \u201cIt resolves itself in a way that suggests that those challenges are not insurmountable.\u201d<\/p>\n Gay and queer representation in the media is especially important for LGBTQIA+ individuals to feel more comfortable with themselves, according to Biu.<\/p>\n \u201cQueer representation in the media can help others who are definitely having a hard time with accepting who they are,\u201d Biu said. \u201cTo be frank, I\u2019m still having a hard time with accepting who I am, and that\u2019s why I think we need these queer representations in the media in different types and forms \u2014 so that people can be able to see it\u2019s okay to be this way.\u201d<\/p>\n Li hopes the popularity of the show proves to industries that there is a hunger<\/a> for queer storylines, which could lead to more representation.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that also opens up the avenue to the publishing industry, not just the film industry, saying, \u2018there is a demand for gay romance,\u2019\u201d Li said.<\/p>\n The popularity of \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d signifies more than a shift in representation of gay characters, Musser said \u2014 it also signifies a shift in American culture. \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d is not only popular for its plot, and beloved characters, but also because of its explicit portrayal of intimate sex scenes<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the post-AIDS epidemic era, gay men\u2019s sexuality has oftentimes been demonized<\/a> or treated as something that\u2019s like a public health hazard<\/a> or threatening to communities,\u201d Musser said. \u201cSo to see the public response to heated rivalry with great enthusiasm about this depiction of sexuality suggests that there\u2019s a shift in cultural attitudes towards the actual sex that gay men are having.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
