{"id":9736,"date":"2025-10-21T05:41:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T05:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/9736\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T05:41:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T05:41:08","slug":"scranton-prep-abington-heights-set-for-states-scranton-times-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/9736\/","title":{"rendered":"Scranton Prep, Abington Heights set for states \u2013 Scranton Times-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scranton Prep and Abington Heights, the two dominant girls\u2019 programs in District 2, head to the PIAA Team Championship playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, both teams start the first round.<\/p>\n<p>Scranton Prep (17-0) plays against District 11 champion Allentown Central Catholic (19-1) at the Lehigh Valley Tennis Club at 12:30 p.m., having won the PIAA Class 2A championship in 2023 and being the runner-up last season.<\/p>\n<p>Abington Heights (17-1), winners of the last eight District 2 Class 3A championships, hosts Wilson (14-2), the District 3 runner-up, at noon at Birchwood Racquet Club.<\/p>\n<p>Winners of first-round matches advance to the quarterfinals on Friday at the Hershey Racquet Club. Semifinals and finals are Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Scranton Prep has enjoyed another dominant season.<\/p>\n<p>The Classics\u2019 strength in the singles ladder and depth in doubles has led to another undefeated run to the district title.<\/p>\n<p>Lily Lengyel and Emma Cuck, who just teamed to win the District 2 Class 2A doubles championship, lead the team at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Lengyel is 19-2 this season, with both losses coming to Montrose junior Cara Evans, the unbeaten district champion. Cuck is 19-1 and is 77-2 in her career.<\/p>\n<p>They each have extensive state-playoff experience.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah LaCoe, who was a key contributor on the past two Scranton Prep teams in doubles, has moved up to No. 3 singles this season and is 17-0.<\/p>\n<p>Allentown Central Catholic defeated Moravian Academy in the District 11 Class 2A championship match last week.<\/p>\n<p>Bernadette Gasser won at No. 1 singles, and Valentina Munoz won at No. 3 singles in the final. The doubles team of Carly Eisenhardt and Charlotte Hood also had a win for the Vikettes.<\/p>\n<p>Last season, the Classics defeated ACC, 5-0. Lengyel defeated Gasser, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Cuck beat Munoz at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Cuck moved up to No. 2 singles this season and will face Madelyn Groff.<\/p>\n<p>Abington Heights won its first-round match against New Oxford last season.<\/p>\n<p>Sona Hanumali is the District 2 Class 3A singles champion, and Amishi Amit and Sammy Rosenstein teamed up to win the doubles gold last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>In last year\u2019s state tournament first round, Amit, the No. 3 singles player, won her match, while Rosenstein and her partner Mary Booth won at No. 1 doubles, and Elsie Phillips and Bernie Mullen secured a victory at No. 2 doubles.<\/p>\n<p>This season, Hanumali has a record of 21-2, and Amit is the No. 2 singles player and the District 2 runner-up. She has a record of 18-3. Rosenstein is 15-1 at No. 3 singles.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips teams with Kate Arp at No. 1 doubles. The team reached the district final and faced Amit-Rosenstein.<\/p>\n<p>Jenna Follansbee and Brielle Crowell play at No. 2 doubles for the Lady Comets.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson, which upset top-seeded Cumberland Valley in the tournament, lost to Manheim Township in the District 3 Class 3A championship match, 3-0.<\/p>\n<p>JinLen Chen and Madison Uzar are the top singles players from Wilson.
