{"id":98091,"date":"2026-01-27T18:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T18:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/98091\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T18:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T18:12:10","slug":"the-site-of-jesus-birth-to-undergo-major-restoration-for-the-first-time-in-600-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/98091\/","title":{"rendered":"The site of Jesus\u2019 birth to undergo major restoration for the first time in 600 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the place believed for more than 1,700 years to be the site of Jesus\u2019 birth, will undergo a major restoration in the coming months for the first time in 600 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Custody of the Holy Land announced the restoration via<a href=\"https:\/\/www.custodia.org\/en\/news\/preserving-the-site-of-christs-birth-the-restoration-of-the-grotto-of-the-nativity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> press release<\/a> Jan. 23. They are undertaking the project with the cooperation of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Patriarchate and under the auspices of the Presidency of the State of Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>The same Italian firm that recently restored the Basilica of the Nativity, which is above the grotto, will execute the new restoration project. The release said this will ensure \u201ccontinuity in method, craftsmanship, and artistic sensitivity toward a site of unparalleled sacred symbolism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with work on the grotto, the restoration will also involve architectural reinforcement to ensure the structure\u2019s stability and symmetry.<\/p>\n<p>Formal plans for restoration and renovation of the grotto began in 2024 when Mahmoud Abbas, the president of Palestine, issued a decree authorizing the project. During his trip to Rome last year, Abbas spoke about the plan both privately with Pope Leo XIV and publicly at the opening of an exhibition about Bethlehem.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/church\/news\/2026-01\/grotto-nativity-bethlehem-restoration-christ-birth-holy-land.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> According<\/a> to Vatican News, Abbas said that the project is \u201ca sign of great hope and rebirth for the whole Holy Land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The oldest church in the Holy Land that remains in use for liturgies, the basilica was originally commissioned by the Emperor Constantine.<a href=\"https:\/\/aleteia.org\/2024\/12\/27\/bethlehems-basilica-of-the-nativity-a-portal-to-the-birth-of-christ\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> According<\/a> to Aleteia, construction began soon after Saint Helen\u2019s trip to the Holy Land, and the original church was completed in 339.
