{"id":98904,"date":"2026-01-28T15:21:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T15:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/98904\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T15:21:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T15:21:08","slug":"sgb-voices-weather-concerns-as-in-person-classes-resume-announces-new-rec-center-safety-initiatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/98904\/","title":{"rendered":"SGB voices weather concerns as in-person classes resume, announces new Rec Center safety initiatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Student Government Board addressed student safety concerns over snowstorm effects and new updates encouraging student and employee protection at the Recreation and Wellness Center at its weekly meeting Tuesday night over Teams.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pitt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/upitt\/photos\/normal-operations-will-resume-on-wednesday-128-read-the-latest-community-message\/1325609769610449\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> Tuesday evening that all in-person activities and classes would resume Wednesday following two days of closures. Board member Andrew Elliott emphasized the challenges of traveling due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtae.com\/weather\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">current road and sidewalk conditions <\/a>and how it could put Pitt students in danger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going back to school tomorrow \u2014 what I personally view as a fairly reckless decision on the University\u2019s part, given that the city of Pittsburgh is still in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wesa.fm\/politics-government\/2026-01-26\/pittsburgh-record-snowfall-snowplows\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state of emergency<\/a> due to the snow and widespread blockages of roads, walkways and the dangers associated with traveling in this weather,\u201d Elliott said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Along with conditions from the recent storm, Elliott added that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/extreme-cold-pittsburgh-area-weather-forecast\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">current and upcoming freezing temperatures<\/a> will also make it unsafe for students to attend in-person classes and activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also a weather advisory for the city, given that wind chill temperatures both tomorrow and Friday will reach below -15 degrees, [which poses] a serious risk of frostbite or hypothermia,\u201d Elliott said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Board member Siya Saraswat advocated for the safety of Pitt students living off-campus due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/pittsburgh-aging-fleet-snow-plows\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">incomplete plowing and snow removal<\/a> in some areas of Oakland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Off-campus] areas are significantly less cleared off compared to on-campus locations,\u201d Saraswat said. \u201cIt is slightly better on campus right now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As students utilize the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reccenter.pitt.edu\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Recreation and Wellness Center<\/a>, board member Kylie Baker and director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellbeing.pitt.edu\/prevention-pitt\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sexual Violence Prevention and Education<\/a> Carrie Benson have been working to improve student protection and employee training to ensure safety for all students at the center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week, I met with Carrie Benson to talk about safety in the Rec Center, how we can improve people\u2019s feeling of safety and how employees can have better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safety.pitt.edu\/training-programs\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bystander training<\/a>,\u201d Baker said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alongside Baker and Benson, Saraswat is working to improve student safety in the Rec Center, potentially by making opportunities to report sexual violence or harassment more accessible within the facility.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are talking about putting up signage in the Rec Center to help report cases of sexual misconduct,\u201d Saraswat said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Baker announced that the second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DQmzBxuEibf\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Warm Clothing Closet<\/a> of the academic year will be open on Friday from noon to 3 p.m. in dining room C of the William Pitt Union. Baker said it will provide access to warm clothing and accessories for Pitt students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not have as much supply this time, but given how awful the weather has been, we just want to get as many students equipped with heavy coats, scarves and hats,\u201d Baker said.<\/p>\n<p>SGB President Marley Pinsky concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/fire-hydrants-heating-safety-winter-storm\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remaining safe during the current conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor those of you living off campus, please do what you need to do to look out for yourselves,\u201d Pinsky said. \u201cLook out for your friends and neighbors, and please prioritize your health and safety over your academics.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Allocations:\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amapittsburgh.org\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=22901070673&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA_6CLHlzFcI2GKt1xPyMGraSBO5Ux&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiA4eHLBhCzARIsAJ2NZoJgbHS3N11L2lG_kA9oKRajY_tlqhmDFTqKCPcuqky5Wh85TM9RsTUaAiiFEALw_wcB\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Marketing Association<\/a> requested $5,661.40 for a competition. The board approved this request in full.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casaatpitt.com\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese American Student Association<\/a> requested $12,648.11 for an on-campus program. The board amended and approved this request to $12,684.11.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/phide\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phi Delta Epsilon<\/a> requested $2,800.84 for a conference. The board approved this request in full.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/bcf\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bethel Campus Fellowship<\/a> requested $5,000.00 for a conference. The board amended and approved this request to $1,441.88.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/womenwaterpolo\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Women\u2019s Water Polo Club<\/a> requested $4,807.25 for general funds. The board amended and approved this request to $3,825.00.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.pitt.edu\/volleyball\/home\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Men\u2019s Volleyball Club<\/a> requested $8,180.67 for a competition.
