The steep drop contrasts sharply with the previous quarter, when local startups raised nearly $1 billion combined.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the slowdown, AI companies once again dominated local deal flow, mirroring national trends that favor AI investments. Still, more than half of the total raised in Q3 was carried by a single deal, showing that investors are still <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/pittsburgh-venture-capital-deals-fundraising-q2-2025\/#:~:text=Fewer%2C%20larger%20deals%20with%20later%2Dstage%20startups%20is%20a%20trend%20that%20has%20continued%20to%20define%20Pittsburgh%E2%80%99s%20fundraising%20landscape%20since%20last%20year.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">favoring fewer, larger deals<\/a> with later-stage startups.<\/p>\n<p>AI startup funding is a sign of \u201crising tides for Pittsburgh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nhi L\u00ea, an investor at Alpha Intelligence Capital<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in the early days of the adoption curve,\u201d Ven Raju, president and CEO of the startup ecosystem organization <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/company\/innovation-works-pittsburgh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Innovation Works<\/a>, told Technical.ly, \u201cand it remains to be seen whether the trillions of dollars invested in AI infrastructure, chip development, models and applications will derive near-term value and returns.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.minevisionsystems.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mine Vision Systems<\/a>, an East Liberty-based mining technology startup, led the quarter by <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/mine-vision-systems-11m-raise-pittsburgh-money-moves\/#:~:text=Mine%20Vision%20Systems%20raises%20%2411.5M%20to%20expand%20local%20hiring\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">securing $11.5 million in later-stage funding<\/a> primarily to expand hiring in the Pittsburgh area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company develops visual intelligence and automation tools for the mining industry \u2013 aligning with the <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/pittsburgh-venture-capital-deals-fundraising-q2-2025\/#:~:text=The%20common%20thread%20among%20successful%20fundraisers%2C%20according%20to%20Raju%2C%20was%20a%20clear%2C%20practical%20application%20of%20AI%20or%20autonomy%20to%20solve%20real%2Dworld%20problems%3A\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ongoing trend<\/a> that companies producing AI products often lead Pittsburgh fundraising rounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen Sequoia, a16z and others with deep pockets make their first investments in Pittsburgh in the last few years,\u201d Raju said. \u201cThat\u2019s not a one-off trend either \u2013 both of those firms have now invested in multiple companies in the region, showing growing commitment from some of the world\u2019s most prominent VCs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>PitchBook data can fluctuate, as past revisions show. Q2 was initially reported as <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/pittsburgh-venture-capital-deals-fundraising-q2-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$600.8 million across 19 deals<\/a>, but the latest report amended that to $977.3 million across 22 deals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761044168_557_thumbnail.jpeg\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\"\/><\/p>\n<p>AI dominates, raking in the majority of Pittsburgh VC<\/p>\n<p>Recent funding trends suggest Pittsburgh\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/civics\/pittsburgh-ai-energy-trump-summit-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing reputation as an AI hub<\/a> isn\u2019t just hype.<\/p>\n<p>At September\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/civics\/ai-horizons-2025-guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI Horizons summit<\/a>, local advocacy group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aistriketeam.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI Strike Team<\/a> claimed Pittsburgh leads all US tech cities outside Silicon Valley in the concentration of AI investment, with roughly 80% of local venture dollars going to AI-related companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since Q1 2023, most venture capital funding in the Pittsburgh region has gone to AI companies, according to PitchBook data. In 2025, 73% of Pittsburgh\u2019s VC funding went to AI companies <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/civic-news\/pittsburgh-venture-capital-deals-fundraising-q1-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">during Q1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/pittsburgh-venture-capital-deals-fundraising-q2-2025\/#:~:text=The%20common%20thread%20among%20successful%20fundraisers%2C%20according%20to%20Raju%2C%20was%20a%20clear%2C%20practical%20application%20of%20AI%20or%20autonomy%20to%20solve%20real%2Dworld%20problems%3A\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">98% in Q2<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AI startup funding is a sign of \u201crising tides for Pittsburgh,\u201d according to Nhi L\u00ea, an investor at Alpha Intelligence Capital. The international firm has been spending more time on the ground in Pittsburgh in recent years because it believes \u201cthis ecosystem can produce multiple fund-returning companies,\u201d L\u00ea told Technical.ly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, that funding still needs to convert into successful returns from scalable, enduring companies, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh isn\u2019t an outlier. AI is driving deal activity nationwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, AI and machine learning startups have accounted for 64% of total venture deal value, despite making up only 38% of deals, according to the report. AI has also captured the majority of capital deployment in Q3 as well, according to Nizar Tarhuni, PitchBook\u2019s executive vice president of research and market intelligence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this surge has fueled optimism around a potential rebound,\u201d Tarhuni said, \u201cthe broader market tells a more complex story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liquidity remains constrained, meaning it\u2019s still hard for investors to cash out on their investments through IPOs or acquisitions. Plus, raising new funds is getting harder as limited partners \u2014 the institutional investors that back VCs \u2014 pull back amid the tighter liquidity. <\/p>\n<p>At this pace, 2025 could mark the weakest year for venture fundraising since 2017, according to the PitchBook report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A new world or big bubble?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are likely to be winners and losers of the AI stack, according to Raju.
