Wisner becomes the fourth running back on the 2025 Longhorns’ roster to enter the portal, and his departure means that filling a massive gap in the offensive backfield suddenly looks like the top offseason priority for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns’ personnel staff.

Pete Nakos of On3 sports confirmed the news with Wisner’s agent, Grayson Sheena of AiC.Sports.

Wisner becomes the 13th Longhorn to enter the portal this season, a list that includes fellow running backs CJ Baxter, Jerrick Gibson and James Stewart. He’s not expected to play for Texas Wednesday in the Citrus Bowl against Michigan.

Wisner has one remaining year of eligibility after playing in 38 games with 20 starts at running back over the past three seasons for Texas. The Waco area native, who played his senior season at powerhouse DeSoto High School south of Dallas, served as a special teams star as a freshman in 2023 before breaking out for 1,375 yards from scrimmage as a sophomore in 2024. He battled through nagging injuries this past season but still led Texas with 597 yards rushing on 131 carries with another 146 yards on 22 receptions.

Redshirt freshman Christian Clark and true freshman James Simon, who have combined for 252 yards on 64 carries this season, will likely get the bulk of the carries in the Citrus Bowl since they’re the only running backs left on the current roster with any carries.

The transfer portal will open Jan. 2-16 for teams not still playing in the College Football Playoff.
