EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — 787 Coffee, a coffee business that started out as a coffee farm in Puerto Rico, has expanded to six locations in El Paso, each with its own unique decor and menu featuring Puerto Rican-based drinks and snacks.

787 Coffee District One Manager Jessica Ortiz says that the business started out as a coffee farm called Hacienda Iluminada, located in Maricao, Puerto Rico. It was founded in 2014 by Brandon Peña and Sam Sepulveda.

Ortiz says in 2017, a hurricane wiped out most of the farm land and devastated the business, but the farm workers were so dedicated to working that the owners decided to rebuild the farm.

787 Coffee opened its first coffee shop in New York City in 2019. Since then, the business has spread to other parts of the US, including El Paso.

Ortiz says the founder of the business, Peña, is originally from El Paso and wanted to bring the coffee shop business to the Borderland.

As of 2025, there are currently six coffee shops in El Paso, and each one is different. The business serves Puerto Rican coffee, which is served from farm to cup, and the decor is mostly tailored to the Puerto Rican culture.

Ortiz says the Alameda location has a lot of art, paintings, and an upstairs lobby. The Stanton location is near UTEP and features Bad Bunny art.

The Montana location will soon have a coffee roaster at the shop, and the latest coffee shop to open is at the Cimarron location.

The Zaragoza location has a drive-thru, and the Doniphan location, which is the one I went to, has a petting zoo.

Ortiz oversees the Alameda, Zaragoza, and Montana locations.

Ortiz says the “Coquito” coffee is their most popular drink, as it’s a Puerto Rican-based drink, and offers a taste of coconut, vanilla, and cinnamon.

They also offer infusions such as rum-coffee infused coffee, whiskey infused coffe, and tequila-infused coffee.

Aside from their popular Coquito coffee drink, they also offer other popular drinks such as their horchata latte, dulce de leche latte, mazapan latte, tres leches latte, pina colada latte, other lattes, espressos, cold brew, matcha, and teas.

They also offer syrups that can enhance the flavor of your drink, such as a dulce de leche syrup, horchata syrup, tres leches syrup, and more.

They also offer snacks, such as their popular chicken empanadas, quesitos, which are pastries with cream cheese, homemade banana bread, and chocolate chip cookies.

The Doniphan location is the only location in El Paso that has a petting zoo, which has two sheep, one ram, a baby cow, a pony, a handful of bunnies, chickens, and roosters.

“So we did specialize in getting an animal worker to help mantain with the pets. To make sure that they’re happy, that they’re growing, that we’re keeping them happy in El Paso, and they love being around all of these caffeinated humans, so it’s a win-win,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz says aside from the six locations in El Paso, 787 Coffee also has 18 shops in New York, four in Puerto Rico, including their coffee farm, one in Houston, and next year they’ll be opening up a shop in Miami and one in New Mexico.
