DALLAS – Firefighters pulled five people from a burning apartment complex in Northeast Dallas early Sunday morning after a fire tore through the roof of a three-story building.

What we know:
The fire was reported around 1:50 a.m. in the 9900 block of Whitehurst Drive, which is in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas. When Dallas Fire-Rescue crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming out of the top of the building.
Fire crews rushed inside the burning units and rescued five residents. Two of those rescued were taken to local hospitals; their current conditions have not been released.
By 4 a.m., the department confirmed the fire was under control. Crews remained on the scene for several hours to douse hot spots, assisted by a drone team that provided an overhead view of the damage.
The Red Cross has been called in to assist an unknown number of residents who lost their homes in the blaze.Â
What’s next:
The Dallas Fire-Rescue Arson team will begin looking for the cause of the fire as soon as the building is safe to enter.
