Upon arrival, deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jose Fernandez-Solano, but he opened fire, injuring Deputy Nathan Sigala in the hand and Deputy Nicholas Zinni in the hip. Fernandez-Solano was killed when deputies returned fire.
Sheriff Javier Salazar stated, “I believe he actually got some warrants of previous incidents, from before he may have lived here at this residence obviously, since that time he has been on the run.” Fernandez-Solano, a Costa Rican national who had been deported at least once, had an extensive criminal history in the U.S., including domestic violence and assault.

The Texas Municipal Police Association criticized the criminal justice system, saying, “The DA’s office and or criminal justice leaders being judges or DA, they dropped the ball on a situation that could have very well turned deadly.”

The incident raises questions about the justice system’s handling of Fernandez-Solano’s case and what changes might be necessary to prevent similar situations in the future.
