The question has been asked before nearly every game Texas football has played in 2025, and it bears repeating one more time as the No. 13 Longhorns prepare to close out their campaign against No. 18 Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. 

Can Texas keep the opposing pass rush from tormenting quarterback Arch Manning at a rate so high that it just about precludes him from playing good football?

In Quinn Ewers’ three-year career as Texas’ starting quarterback, he faced a pressure rate higher than 40% exactly once. Manning has faced that in six of his nine starts against power conference teams, including four of the five ranked teams on the Longhorns’ schedule.

Arch Manning: What Will Michigan’s pressure rate be against Texas football QB?

Predictably, Manning’s best performances have generally come when the Texas offensive line has played well in front of him. In the three outlier games from the same sample, where Texas’ offensive line has protected him well, Manning is averaging 354 passing yards per game to go with 10 total touchdowns and one interception.

The Longhorns have an opportunity in this game to provide Manning with the kind of passing platform he needs. Trevor Goosby, a potential first-round NFL draft choice at left tackle should he choose to go pro, is playing, giving Texas a full complement at offensive line — a unit that played much better down the stretch of the season. 

And Michigan’s unremarkable pass rush will be depleted. The Wolverines finished the regular season 41st nationally with 2.33 sacks per game. Derrick Moore and Jaishawn Barham, responsible for 14 sacks between them, are both opting out of the Citrus Bowl.

Texas football: Can the Longhorns manage passable efficiency in the ground game?

There will be a burnt orange reunion in the transfer portal when it officially opens for college football players Jan. 2. The top three running backs on the Texas depth chart are expected to enter their names: Quintrevion Wisner, CJ Baxter and Jerrick Gibson. 

The Longhorn rushing attack, manned primarily by Wisner and Baxter, produced about as much excitement in 2025 as a paint-drying contest being held at the local DMV. Texas averaged 3.95 yards per rush in the regular season. That’s by far the worst mark of Steve Sarkisian’s tenure as head coach, placing the Longhorns 93rd out of 136 FBS teams. 

Certainly, some of that is attributable to the Longhorns’ subpar offensive line play. But Texas’ running backs didn’t exactly help the cause, either. Wisner averaged 3.25 yards after contact per rush, which ranked 11th among the 19 SEC running backs with 100 or more touches during the regular season. Baxter, for his part, averaged 2.41 yards after contact per rush.

Given the departures, a transfer portal addition at running back looks like a near certainty for 2026 as new position coach Jabbar Juluke takes over. But on Wednesday, Texas must figure out how to find some production from the lower reaches of its depth chart. 

Who gets the bulk of the carries? Rookie James Simon posted the most efficient numbers during the regular season, with 4.2 yards per carry. Redshirt freshman Christian Clark touched the ball 35 times and picked up 3.7 yards a pop. Don’t count out wide receiver convert Michael Terry, either. The coveted freshman was moved to running back earlier this season to help the Longhorns cope with what Sarkisian viewed as a lack of depth at the position.

2025 Citrus Bowl: How many developmental snaps can the Texas Longhorns fit in?

Like it or not, bowl games outside of the College Football Playoff bracket often serve as glorified developmental opportunities for programs like Michigan and Texas, two of the biggest brands in the sport.

At some positions, like running back, the Longhorns will be forced into promoting younger players into the spotlight. Similar situations will play out in the secondary, where Texas had three starters opt out, and at linebacker, where the Longhorns are without the starting duo of Liona Lefau and Anthony Hill Jr.

Elsewhere, does Texas look to force the issue? 

Could freshman quarterback KJ Lacey enter the game for Manning at some point? Do the Longhorns devote more snaps to promising freshman defensive linemen Lance Jackson and Justus Terry? And what about the collection of top-200 freshmen the Longhorns signed at wide receiver in the last cycle? The hole vacated by the transferring DeAndre Moore Jr. could be filled, in part, by Kaliq Lockett, Daylan McCutcheon or Jaime Ffrench Jr.
