TEXAS (WHSV) – Exactly 180 years ago on Dec. 29, 1845, Texas was admitted to the Union as the 28th state.
Texas originally gained independence from Spain in the 1820s, falling under Mexican rule. Mexico welcomed foreign settlers to the land, including a large number of Americans.
Eventually, Americans outnumbered Mexicans in Texas, and the Mexican government’s attempts to regulate American communities led to rebellion in the 1830s. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 while in an armed conflict with the Mexican government.
After years of delayed congressional action because it was a slave state, Texas was annexed, and it joined the U.S. in 1845.
