FRISCO — Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday quarterback Dak Prescott is expected to start in Sunday’s regular season finale against the New York Giants.

Schottenheimer also gave himself a little wiggle room regarding Prescott’s status.

“Yeah, plan on finishing strong and having Dak play, again get a chance to go 5-1 hopefully in the division, finish 8-8-1 and that’s the plan as we’re looking at now,” Schottenheimer said.

Schottenheimer was also asked whether backup Joe Milton would play at some point on Sunday.

“We’ll look at that,” he said. “The biggest thing for me is to put the game plan together and hopefully have another great week of practice and focus on getting our prep. You know how much respect I have for (the Giants), this defense we’re getting ready to play, an elite front seven. But yeah, we’ll see how the week goes. But right now, the plan is to play Dak.”

After the Cowboys defeated the Commanders on Christmas Day to end a three-game losing streak, Prescott said he wanted to start the final game. He said that whenever those discussions occur about sitting down, he would make it a difficult decision.

Schottenheimer said every game matters, regardless of where a team sits in the standings.

The Giants defeated the Raiders on Sunday, which pushed them to the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft with a 3-13 record. The Raiders’ loss placed them No. 1 overall with a 2-14 mark.

Should the Giants lose to the Cowboys and the Raiders defeat the Chiefs on Sunday, things would change. In that scenario, both teams would be 3-14, but the Giants would win the tiebreaker with the weaker strength of schedule percentage.

As for the Cowboys, their record has them with the No. 14 overall pick in the draft.

“I think they all mean something, that’s what I would say,” Schottenheimer said. “I think they all do mean something. I think we’re all being evaluated on the whole season here. We’re proud of the fact we’ve played well against the NFC East opponents and get a chance to play another one this weekend. But yeah, I feel good about it.”
