A major holiday event which has spent more than 40 years extending the Christmas spirit into the impending New Year for residents and citizens of South Texas is returning to Corpus Christi.

On Jan. 10, First Christian Church will host the 42nd annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival. All festival performances will be at First Christian Church at 3401 Santa Fe St. in Corpus Christi, with performances happening at 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. at the church.

Doors open an hour before each of the Jan. 10 performances in the sanctuary, and admission is free for all. However, donations of non-perishable food items will be

accepted on behalf of the “Good King Wencelas” fund and donated to the Food Bank of Corpus Christi according to a news release.

The annual renaissance faire has taken place each year for more than four decades, and a news release said first told during a feast at Oxford to celebrate a student’s victory over a wild and raging boar. The present-day festival results from an amalgamation of several antique celebrations turned into a procession of dances and music, joining traditions of Old England with the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ according to a news release.

During the performances, there will be more than 180 people in authentic Renaissance costumes playing a part in the hour-long pageant which recreates a medieval manor house according to a news release. They will be joined by an orchestra featuring 50 chorus/orchestra members who will provide music from the time period, and those in attendance will also have the chance to participate in the singing of Christmas carols.

There will also be a special appearance by a red-tail hawk, courtesy of the Hawn Wild Flight Program at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi.
