2025 Caprock Classic benefitting Lubbock Caprock AMBUCS, residents who need mobility assistance

  • December 30, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Walk into a high school gym in the Lubbock area this week and you’re bound to see some great basketball action.

Matt White is the tournament director for the Caprock Classic. He said this will greatly benefit the boys and girls on the court as they head into the new year.

“We’ve got about 96 teams playing this year across nine gyms, 13 floors total,” White said. “It gives the area teams a chance to get some extra games in before district play starts, and then we have teams from across the state and even from Oklahoma this year that get to play teams they normally don’t get to play, see some competition.”

The play on the hardwood is just one part of the equation. Joe Hoelscher, president of Lubbock Caprock AMBUCS, said it benefits the nonprofit in a significant way.

“This is Lubbock Caprock AMBUCS only fundraiser of the year,” Hoelscher said. “It’s a big fundraiser, but we use the money from the tournament through gate sales and advertisers. We use that money to do a lot of cool things.”

The biggest thing the money is used for is to purchase more AmTrykes, which are therapeutic tricycles for children or adults who are unable to ride a normal bicycle. Another thing the money is used for in this fundraiser looks to try and build on something significant for the future.

“In 2026, we’re looking at expanding our ramp program,” Hoelscher said. “For example, home-bound elderly that can’t get past their front door, we’ll build wheelchair ramps at no costs for them to get past their front door and have a better quality of life.”

As you can see, these AmTrykes and ramps come with a heavier price tag, so every dollar raised during this three day period will go a long way in making someone’s day-to-day life a little better.

As the Caprock Classic wages on, Hoelscher and White said they’re grateful to be able to give back and help in any way they can for those that need it.

“I just enjoy being able to give back,” White said. “My kids ask me what do I get paid to do this tournament? I pay money to do this tournament, all us volunteers do. It’s just a way that civically we can give back.”
