Dallas Fire Rescue responded to a major fire at 9911 Whitehurst Drive early Sunday, December 28. Two residents were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Units arriving at 1:50 a.m. conducted search and rescue efforts at the three-story building, despite heavy fire and thick smoke. Numerous residents were trapped by flames and had to be rescued, according to Box 4 Firebuffs.
Firefighters aggressively attacked the blaze at first, then shifted to defensive tactics from outside the building. At 4:35 a.m. the fire was declared extinguished. Box 4 Firebuffs, a nonprofit organization which provides aid to first responders, remained on scene for hours to assist firefighters as needed.
All 36 apartment units inside the building were left uninhabitable due to extensive fire, smoke and water damage. The American Red Cross is assisting at least 20 displaced residents.
Dallas City Council member Kathy Stewart and her team are coordinating with Vicky Taylor in the Lake Highlands Public Improvement District (PID) office to collect gift cards for displaced residents with immediate needs including food, clothing and basic supplies.
If you’re willing to help, drop gift cards at the LHPID office, 8676 Skillman near Tom Thumb, or call 214-850-4399. The LHPID team is working with property managers to distribute donations to residents affected by the fire. You may donate to Box 4 Firebuffs here.
