Lubbock police urge safe New Year’s Eve celebrations as officers increase patrols

  • December 30, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – As people finalize their New Year’s Eve plans, law enforcement is reminding residents that the choices they make could determine how their year actually ends.

Whether celebrating at packed bars, hosting living room watch parties, or attending church events, the Lubbock Police Department said the most dangerous part of the evening often occurs when people are heading home.

Officer Rick Benavides said the department wants everyone to stay safe while having fun, but emphasized the importance of planning ahead.

“We want everybody to be safe we will respond to those type of calls where there might be intoxicated drivers. As far as bars and parking lots, we just want people to be smart, have fun but plan ahead,” Benavides said.

Police said this is one of the busiest times of the year on the roads, which means residents will likely see more officers patrolling throughout the city. Their primary focus will be identifying impaired drivers, as one poor decision can have lasting consequences.

“Well first you’ll be going to jail, your car may be towed depending on the condition of circumstance, hefty fines, hefty lawyer fees its something you’ll be dealing with for along time,” Benavides said.

For Texas Tech fans planning to start their celebrations early with the team’s upcoming game, officers recommend moderation and preparation.

“Moderation is a good idea. There’s going to be a lot of things to celebrate this week for the new year, just take it easy. An early game for Tech, make sure to eat plenty of food and be with a group of friends, have someone be responsible,” Benavides said.

Police also reminded residents that fireworks remain illegal to possess and use within city limits.
