Texas Tech coaches discuss support of Ronald McDonald House Charities

  • October 19, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – When you watch each Texas Tech game, be on the lookout for sacks.

Every time Texas Tech sacks an opposing quarterback, more money is raised, through pledges to Quarterback S.A.C.K., supporting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Southwest.

Texas Tech head football coach Joey McGuire discussed this long-running partnership between Tech Athletics and the Ronald McDonald House following the Red Raiders’ school-record nine sacks against Kansas.

“They’re fired up, man,” McGuire said. “They want to hit the quarterback no matter what, but this is always a good purpose.”

Nine sacks in a game also matches the high mark for any FBS program in a game this season. Tech now has 21 sacks on the season.

Defensive coordinator Shiel Wood said Coach McGuire shared the success of Quarterback S.A.C.K. with the staff and team.

“I think that’s awesome,” Wood said with a smile. “And the more sacks, the merrier.”

McGuire said the Ronald McDonald House staff messaged him, “amount they raised and she, of course, was like ‘oh my gosh, nine sacks!’.”

McGuire said he puts this information on Power Point presentations on Tuesday, tracking the team’s progress. Then he shares messages from the Ronald McDonald House with defensive coaches and those racking up sacks, including David Bailey and Romello Height.

McGuire stressed the importance of anyone helping others.

“All this stuff of you feeling sorry for yourself or if you’re sore or anything like that,” McGuire explained. “That can’t exist whenever you have an attitude of gratitude. And you have an attitude of…you’re a servant and how much you’re helping people.”

How you can help

For more than a quarter century, Texas Tech Athletics has partnered with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Southwest. Every sack leads to more money raised.

There is still time for you to donate this season. Click here – for the Quarterback S.A.C.K. website. Fans can pledge to donate any dollar amount for every sack made by Texas Tech defense during the football season.

All proceeds help to give back to those families who need it most.

The Ronald McDonald House in Lubbock provides families with a home away from home when they have a child receiving medical care. Families who stay at the House may have a newborn staying in the NICU, a child receiving cancer treatments, or needing any other medical care. Families within our local children’s hospitals, Covenant Children’s and UMC Children’s, are also able to take a break and grab a snack at our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms inside the hospitals. These rooms offer respite and comfort as well as access to basic necessities like showers, laundry, coffee, snacks, and more.
