ORLANDO, Fla. — A 2025 football season at Texas that featured a few lows ended on a high note.

Arch Manning ran for 23-yard and 60-yard touchdowns and threw for a 30-yard score in the fourth quarter of a 41-27 win over Michigan at Camping World Stadium on Wednesday. With the victory in the Citrus Bowl, UT claimed a 10-3 record for the year.

Texas entered the season with the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press poll, but losses to Ohio State, Florida and Georgia kept the Longhorns out of the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2022. But with Wednesday’s win over the Wolverines, Texas secured double-digit victories in a third straight season for the first time since a nine-year stretch from 2001-09.

Michigan dropped to 9-4 with the loss.

After Cheez-It mascot Prince Cheddward administered the pregame coin toss in front of an announced crowd of 47,316, Texas opened with the football. The Longhorns quickly put together a drive that featured Ryan Wingo’s 22-yard catch, Christian Clark’s 22-yard run and Mason Shipley’s 43-yard field goal.

Later in the quarter, two critical Texas errors  — a Graceson Littleton facemask on what appeared to be a third-down stop and a fumbled kickoff return by Ryan Niblett  — led to Michigan scoring 10 points in a span of 46 seconds. Even with those miscues by Texas, Michigan needed to work for its points as Dominic Zvada made his second 50-yard field goal of the season and Kendrick Bell recorded an acrobatic 19-yard catch in the end zone.

Texas and Michigan traded touchdowns over the first five minutes of the second quarter, and the Longhorns forced the game’s third tie on Manning’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Jack Endries with 7:41 left in the first half. Texas had a chance to score additional points ahead of halftime, but one dropped pass and a bad snap spoiled a drive that reached the Michigan 21-yard line. The Wolverines then missed a 45-yard kick on the first half’s final play.

Manning threw for 147 yards and a touchdown in the first half while also running for 37 yards, 19 of which were picked up on a fourth-and-1 play that set up a short touchdown run by Clark. Meanwhile, Michigan’s Bryce Underwood threw two touchdowns and accounted for a team-high 33 rushing yards over the first two quarters. Manning and Underwood were respectively rated as the top recruits in the 2023 and 2025 classes.

In fourth quarter, Manning leads Longhorns with his legs, arm

After the halftime intermission, both Michigan and Texas opened the third quarter with a scoring drive. Michigan converted two fourth-down attempts on its way to a 31-yard field goal. The Longhorns then overcame a couple of holding penalties on a nine-play possession that Manning capped with his 23-yard touchdown run.

A Wardell Mack interception thwarted a Michigan scoring opportunity in the third quarter, but the Wolverines avoided a turnover on their next possession. On a second-and-goal play with 10:56 left, Underwood scampered to the right pylon, dived into the end zone and was credited with a lead-taking touchdown. It appeared that Underwood lost control of the ball near the end of the play, but an official review confirmed that score instead of ruling that the Michigan quarterback had fumbled and gifted Texas a timely touchback.

Texas wasn’t down for long, though. Manning directed a nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive that featured a 15-yard run by the quarterback on a fourth-and-2 attempt and a 30-yard touchdown pass to freshman Kaliq Lockett. The fifth career catch for Lockett, who was seeing increased playing time in the Citrus Bowl due to in-game injuries to Emmett Mosley V and Ryan Wingo, lifted Texas to a 31-27 lead with 6:54 left.

Michigan was unable to pull any closer. Texas linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith ended UM’s next two drives with interceptions, and Manning slammed the door on the Wolverines with a 60-yard touchdown run in between those two turnovers. Shipley’s 51-yard field goal with 3:38 remaining was the  final score.

Manning finished with 221 passing yards and he ran nine times for 155 yards to become the first UT quarterback with 100 rushing yards since Sam Ehlinger in 2017. Redshirt freshman Christian Clark rushed for 105 yards to boost a backfield that lost Quintrevion Wisner and CJ Baxter to the transfer portal earlier this month.

With Wednesday’s result, Texas officially put a bow on the fifth year of the Steve Sarkisian era at Texas. The Longhorns are 48-20 under Sarkisian, who led the team to the College Football Playoff during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The Texas team that walked off the field at Camping World Stadium will revamp its roster. In addition to the transfers and draft prospects who opted out of the Citrus Bowl, UT must now say goodbye to senior starters like DJ Campbell and Cole Hutson. Left tackle Trevor Goosby and defensive lineman Hero Kanu are among the draft-eligible players on the team who said this week that they had not yet made a decision about their futures.

Manning will headline the Longhorns’ returnees next year, and Sarkisian has said that Texas will be active in recruiting the transfer portal. The 2026 season opens for Texas on Sept. 5 with a home game against Texas State.
