The state auditor’s final report says the school overrode safeguards in spending.
HOUSTON — Texas Southern University in hot water after it was unable to account for millions of dollars in spending.Â
It’s the result of a final report from the state auditor.Â
The top issues, according to the audit, is that the university overrode safeguards to make purchases, buying things from vendors without first completing requisitions. That leads to budget overruns.Â
TSU has also not been doing an annual inventory which resulted in the loss of 50 assets totaling $3.2 million. The state auditor also says the university failed to get timely and accurate financial data to their office.Â
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who called for a Texas Rangers investigation back in November, posted on social media Wednesday, “I will do everything in my power to be sure that not one additional taxpayer dollar goes unaccounted for ever again at TSU.”
On Wednesday afternoon, the university responded to our request for a statement,  saying it has “provided recommendations to strengthen the compliance, integrity, and effectiveness of institutional, financial, and business processes, including asset management.”Â
TSU also says it has adopted all of the state auditor’s recommendations.
