CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A group of local youths helped prevent a grass fire from spreading at a residence south of Sinton by forming a bucket brigade and dousing the flames while firefighters were on the way, according to San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera.

Rivera said the group noticed a small grass fire starting on a neighbor’s property and immediately began working to contain it using any available water containers they could find.

“They gathered every bucket, flower vase and bottle they could get their hands on and formed a bucket brigade,” Rivera said.

Rivera said dry conditions and winds around 13 mph created the potential for the fire to grow quickly, but the youths’ actions helped keep the flames under control until fire crews arrived to fully extinguish the fire.

He praised the group for their quick thinking, teamwork and awareness, saying their response likely prevented the situation from becoming much more serious.
