Former Texas football player and assistant coach Blake Gideon will reportedly rejoin Steve Sarkisian’s staff after spending this past season at Georgia Tech.
Texas officials have not confirmed the report by CBS Sports, but Gideon is in line for a “high-ranking” spot on the Longhorns’ defensive staff, per the report.
Sarkisian fired defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski, defensive passing game coordinator Duane Akina and nickleback coach Keynodo Hudson in December and hired Will Muschamp as Texas’ new defensive coordinator. The Longhorns have yet to name any other new defensive assistants.
A Central Texas native who starred at Leander High School, Gideon played safety for the Longhorns from 2008-11 when Muschamp was Texas’ defensive coordinator under former coach Mack Brown. Gideon coordinated the special teams at Houston and Ole Miss before joining the Longhorns as a safeties coach from 2021-24 as part of Sarkisian’s first staff at Texas.
In 2024, Gideon helped orchestrate a Texas passing defense that led the nation in yards per attempt as well as yards per completion. This year, the Longhorns slipped to 12th in the SEC by giving up 234.6 yards passing a game, and Texas allowed at least 27 points in five of its final six games.
