A driver died Saturday after crashing into a utility pole on Dallas Parkway in Plano, despite bystanders’ heroic efforts to save him.

Plano police and fire crews responded to the 1500 block of southbound Dallas Parkway at 12:15 p.m. Saturday. A preliminary investigation found that a silver Hyundai Accent traveling at a high rate of speed struck a curb before slamming into a concrete power pole.

The car then crashed into an unoccupied Subaru Legacy at a nearby dealership. Flames quickly engulfed the Hyundai.

Witnesses rushed to pull the driver from the burning wreckage before first responders arrived. Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. No other injuries were reported in the crash.

Police withheld the victim’s identity pending notification of the family. The Plano Police Traffic Unit continues investigating what caused the driver to lose control.

The crash temporarily closed portions of Dallas Parkway.
