Lubbock, Texas – Warm temperatures and gusty southwest winds are creating elevated fire weather conditions across the South Plains today, prompting concerns for rapid fire spread in dry grasslands and open areas from Plainview to Childress.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, mostly sunny skies combined with breezy to windy southwest winds will push afternoon highs well above normal, climbing into the mid to upper 70s for much of the region. Some eastern locations, including Childress and Aspermont, may surge into the lower to mid 80s. Low humidity and dry fuels are adding to the fire danger, especially during the peak heating hours this afternoon.
Communities including Lubbock, Brownfield, Friona, and Plainview are expected to see frequent wind gusts capable of quickly spreading any grass or brush fires that ignite. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and use caution with equipment that could produce sparks. Even small fires could become difficult to control under these conditions.
Winds are expected to ease later tonight as temperatures fall into the 30s and 40s, bringing quieter conditions overnight. While fire weather concerns will diminish after sunset, officials warn that dry conditions persist, and caution is still advised.
Residents are encouraged to remain alert for local fire restrictions and monitor updates from emergency management and the National Weather Service in case additional advisories are issued.
