LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Family and friends gathered to remember and honor an 18-year-old Monterey High School senior who died in a tragic fireworks accident while celebrating New Year’s Day.
Kobe Pena was celebrating with family and friends when a firecracker he was holding exploded near his head. He later died from his injuries.
Those who knew the senior came together to share memories and celebrate the life he lived. His family said while their grief is overwhelming, so is the love he leaves behind.
Michelle Flores, Kobe’s great aunt, said the loss is particularly heartbreaking because he was so close to achieving his goals.
“It’s very heartbreaking he was suppose to graduate soon so here comes May, we’ll be mourning. He was excited he was going to graduate with honors. His plans was suppose to go to welding school, he wanted to be a welder,” Flores said.

Friends and family held onto each other while releasing dozens of balloons into the sky, sharing stories and small moments that made Kobe special. They remembered his laughter, jokes, and the kindness he showed every day.
Nathan Nunez, his best friend, said Kobe had an unforgettable personality.
“Kobe had just a big personality, he was amazing, he wasn’t funnier than me but he was funny, being with him has just been amazing,” Nunez said.
Kobe’s friends said losing him leaves a hole in their hearts that can’t be filled.
“Tomorrow is not promised and we wake up everyday regretting we could of spent more time. God has a plan for all of us, God had a plan for him, down here everybody just shows love that we all had for Kobe. Kobe was a great impact on all of us,” Jasias Ruiz, another best friend, said.
Ralph Ramon, Monterey High School baseball coach, said the loss is felt by everyone who watched Kobe grow as a student, athlete and young man.
“We love him very much and we love what he was about and the kid worked hard not only in the field but the classroom and in life. His smile could brighten up a room,” Ramon said.
