Friends, family and fellow rappers began mourning the loss of Oak Cliff rapper Zeethewizard on Monday, five days after he was shot along with four others at a Dallas gentlemen’s club while ringing in the new year.

The Dallas Police Department confirmed the death of the 25-year-old rapper, born Zec’Qurie Cannon Grant Fields, in an email statement. In the wake of his passing, his loved ones took to social media to eulogize him.

Funeral arrangements for Fields were pending with a relative saying they planned to announce details soon. As of Monday evening, police had not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting.

Officials have also not publicly disclosed information about the other victims or their conditions.

The rapper had been a member of New Dallas, a rising collective of artists who eschew neighborhood turf wars and interpersonal feuds, in lieu of working to promote peace and unity. He had also generated underground buzz in recent months, scoring his most-streamed single.

“Since kids to grown men we been locked,” New Dallas rapper HeadHuncho Amir wrote in a Instagram post of Fields. He praised Fields’ mother for raising him to be “genuine, loving, [and] respectful.”

The pair had been on the phone recently, Amir wrote, to discuss the roll out for Fields’ music. The latter had signed recently to FreeBandz, the record label founded by hip-hop star Future.

“I can’t stop crying I wish this . . . was all a dream,” Amir wrote.

Fields had reportedly been on life support after the shooting, according to WFAA, during which time his friends and family urged others on social media to not prematurely speculate about his condition.

“I thought you had it man,” New Dallas rapper Zillionaire Doe wrote on his Instagram story, referring to hope for Fields’ recovery. “Until we meet again … see ya on da other side.”

Fields was more than an artist, his sister ZeBoria Cannon wrote in an Instagram tribute, calling him “a light.”

“He consistently encouraged people to stay positive, keep going, and choose hope even when life gets heavy,” she wrote. “While we are devastated by this loss, we ask everyone who loved him to help carry that message forward, not only through his music, but through the way you treat each other, the way you show up for your people, and the way you choose love.”
