With this and some drier air mixing into the atmosphere today, temperatures will warm nicely nearing record highs for cities like Austin and San Antonio. Still watching for rain chances with the cold front Thursday and Friday for parts of Texas. Cooler temperatures will arrive for the weekend.

1. State of Texas to start audit, investigation of childcare facilities

The office of Gov. Greg Abbott has published a press release saying that the state of Texas will be auditing childcare facilities.

The audit, which is under the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), will be conducting routine audits of providers and in-person site visits, according to the release. The release also mentions the alleged improper payment rates of childcare facilities in Minnesota.

2. Oil stocks sharply higher after U.S. action in Venezuela

Shares of major U.S. companies in the energy sector are sharply higher Monday after President Donald Trump announced plans to take control of Venezuela’s oil industry, saying that it would be American companies helping to revitalize it following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.

While the U.S. action is unlikely to have an immediate impact on crude prices given the current glut in the market, it could upend energy markets and have an impact on the geopolitical landscape.

3. Texas Tech signs historically tall player to Lady Raiders basketball

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders basketball team is making history with its newest signee.

Stephanie Okechukwu, a 7-foot-1 center, is the tallest player in women’s college basketball history, according to a release from the university’s sports website. Okechukwu comes to Lubbock from Umunneochi, Nigeria after attending high school in Kyoto, Japan.

North Texas to utilize AI for 911 calls during World Cup matches

Major transportation funding is heading to North Texas as the region prepares to host the FIFA World Cup, with part of the investment aimed at improving 911 emergency response through artificial intelligence-powered language translation technology.

Officials say the funding will be especially critical for Arlington, where AT&T Stadium will host nine World Cup matches, including a semifinal — the most of any host city in North America.
