HOUSTON – Despite a trio of double-doubles and two players with 17 kills, the Houston Volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Arizona inside Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Lottie Scully earned her fifth double-double of the season behind 20 assists and 15 digs while both freshman Tenesyn Frye (20 assists, 10 digs) and redshirt sophomore Alyssa Gonzales (17 kills, 10 digs) recorded the first of their careers. It marked the first time Houston had three players record double-doubles in the same match since Angela Grieve, Kate Georgiades, Annie Cooke and Lily Barron all did so against Ole Miss on Sept. 20, 2024.

Senior Alana Torres-Rivera tallied 18 digs to lead the Cougars while redshirt senior Barakat Rahmon posted a match-best six blocks. Gonzales’ 17 kills marked her 20th career match with double digits in the category and third consecutive while senior Bre Reid also added 17 kills, her eighth match with 10+ this season.

Neither team claimed momentum early. The largest lead as Houston forced the media timeout at 15-14 had been two while the teams were tied nine times in that span. A 6-0 run for the Wildcats out of the timeout put Arizona ahead, allowing the visitors to claim a 25-18 win in the opening frame.

Houston responded in the second. A 4-1 stretch forced an Arizona timeout at 14-11 and the Cougars used another 5-1 stretch to push their lead to 19-14. The Wildcats nearly fought back to tie it, but Houston shut the door on any comeback attempts, closing a 25-20 set win with a 3-0 run.

Another close set early as neither team was able to establish a lead in the third. Houston and Arizona traded small runs before an 8-0 run for the Cougars put the home team up 23-17. Arizona answered with their own stretch of dominance to claim the set, however, using a 9-1 run to win the third, 26-24.

The Wildcats capped the win in the fourth. Evenly splitting the first 10 points, Arizona took the lead with an 8-1 run midway through the set that allowed them to cruise to a 25-19 win in the final frame.
