LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Children ages three to five years old had the chance to gear up while learning safety tips as Lubbock ISD hosted its first Tricycle Derby at Safety City.
The event provided a fun day of racing and safety education. Children got to pick out a helmet and a tricycle before racing with their families and Lubbock staff cheering them on.
Joni Rondela, early childhood coordinator for Lubbock ISD, said kids are never too young to learn how to safely navigate the roads.
“Safety comes in all shapes and sizes,” Rondela said. “As we know, as our young ones are beginning to ride their tricycles and ride their bicycles, we want them to understand the safety of the roads, the safety of the side walks, the safety of wearing their helmets.”
“But then, of course, the health and the nutrition behind it. This is fantastic for growth motor skills, this is fantastic just for a healthy lifestyle and healthy development.”
Rondela said the district wants to make this a yearly event and hopes to see more children at the next Tricycle Derby.
