TEXAS — According to a report from SmartAsset.com, Texas in 2025 made up 20% of the top 20 cities with the highest property tax burden in the country.

Edinburg, Georgetown, Conroe and Grand Prairie are all on the list, each coming in at over 5% of taxes related to total income. Topping the list is Paterson, N.J., where that number is nearly 10% and where residents pay a median of $9,779 in yearly property tax.

Though Edinburg is the highest on the list for Texas cities, with a median of $4,366 paid per year, the highest median property tax by number in Texas is Georgetown, where homeowners pay an average of $6,493 per year.

Other states with multiple cities on the list include Connecticut, New Jersey, and California.

According to the website, the data was collected as part of the 2024 U.S. Census and included 343 cities with a population of over 100,000.
