Jan. 7 (UPI) — Former Texas star wide receiver Jordan Shipley was involved in an accident on his ranch in Texas and is in critical, but stable, condition, his family announced.
“Jordan was involved in an accident this afternoon near his hometown of Burnet,” Shipley’s family said Tuesday in a statement released by the Longhorns. “The machine he was operating on his ranch caught fire, and although he managed to get out, it was not before sustaining severe burns on his body in the process.
“He was able to get to one of his workers on the ranch who drove him to a local hospital. He was then care-flighted to Austin, where he remains in critical, but stable condition.”
Bobby Burton of On Texas Football initially reported that Shipley sustained third-degree burns on over 20% of his body from the accident.
Shipley played for his dad, Bob Shipley, at Burnet High School in Burnet, Texas. His 5,424 receiving yards and 73 receiving touchdowns are the second-most in Texas high school football history.
Shipley, 40, joined the Longhorns in 2004, but missed his first two seasons due to injuries. He appeared in 53 games for the Longhorns from 2006 through 2009, when they lost to Alabama in the BCS national title game. Shipley earned All-American honors during his final season, when he caught 116 passes for 1,485 yards and 13 scores. He also scored twice on punt returns that season.
He went on to become a third-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2010 NFL Draft. Shipley also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He retired in 2014.
Shipley later worked as a host for the Longhorn Network. He is the owner of Shipley Ranches, a full-service farm and ranch real estate brokerage.
