A Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighter fell from a second-floor balcony and was injured at an early morning apartment fire Thursday in Northwest Dallas, officials said.

The structure fire was reported in the 9800 block of Brockbank Drive about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Jason Evans, a DFR spokesperson.

Firefighters quickly gained control of the fire at the two-story apartment building, but a second alarm was called after a firefighter issued a mayday call after a fall from a second-floor balcony, Evans said.

The mayday was immediately cancelled after the firefighter was found outside the building, he said.

As a precaution, Evans said the firefighter was taken to a hospital for evaluation, but has non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been been discharged, Evans said.

The fire was declared out at 2:26 a.m., and damaged four apartments, three of which were vacant, Evans said.

Two tenants from the one unit were displaced but have been re-housed on-site by apartment management, according to Evans.

Evans said the cause of this fire is undetermined.
