In San Antonio, many drivers know about avoiding Loop 1604 if possible, and the bumper-to-bumper traffic on Interstate 35 in the early morning hours or after work. But, despite all the traffic and road closures, San Antonio landed as one of the best cities to drive in, according to a recent ranking.

WalletHub, a personal finance company, ranked the Alamo City at No. 25 in its list of “Best & Worst Cities to Drive in (2025)” released on October 7. Researchers ranked 100 of the largest cities across 30 key indicators of driver-friendliness. The data set ranges from average gas prices to annual hours in traffic congestion per auto commuter to auto repair shops per capita.

San Antonio’s overall ranking was at No. 25, but the city ranked sixth in the cost of ownership and maintenance category, 38th in traffic and infrastructure, 73rd in the safety ranking and 53rd in the access to vehicles and maintenance category. San Antonio also ranked fourth for having the lowest average gas prices. San Francisco had the worst average gas prices, according to the ranking.

Corpus Christi was named the best city to drive in, while Philadelphia was listed as the worst. Corpus Christi was listed as the best thanks to its low costs, being the third-cheapest city for gas and tied for seventh-cheapest for purchasing a new vehicle, according to the ranking. It’s also the 11th-least expensive city when it comes to additional vehicle operating costs, like lost time and fuel waste due to traffic congestion, or damage from poorly-maintained roads.

In the top 10, Laredo was listed as the 5th best city to drive in, Lubbock took the sixth slot, Plano claimed eighth and Austin landed at No. 9, respectively. In the bottom 10, major cities were listed, such as Los Angeles (No. 93), San Francisco (No. 95), Chicago (No. 96), New York (No. 97) and Washington, D.C. (No. 98).

According to the ranking, Lubbock and Corpus Christi had the lowest annual hours spent in congestion per auto commuter. Chicago and New York had the highest. Lubbock also had one of the lowest likelihoods of an accident versus the national average.
