A 2-0 victory over New Mexico State Sunday secured WKU Soccer a top-three seed in Conference USA in its final home regular season game.
The Hilltoppers capitalized on many opportunities in the first period, despite heavy winds and temperatures below 60, threatening to slow them down.
Junior midfielder Georgia Lipais opened the scoring for the Hilltoppers, converting on a clean touch pass from graduate forward Danielle Lewin. Moments later, freshman forward Makenna Egan delivered a quick strike that slipped behind the nets. Lipais has racked up a staggering eight goals this season, and rising freshman sensation Egan added five herself.
“It was really good to see them produce again today, two fantastic goals,” Head Coach Jason Neidell said.
On the other end, the Lady Toppers’ defensive momentum kept them afloat against New Mexico’s offensive game plan, forcing multiple collapses in their final third. Hilltopper concluded the half on eight shots with three on target.
“Once we settled into the game, I thought we executed the game plan really, really well,” Neidell said.
The second half was a defensive deadlock, with neither side finishing in the final third. With this final home victory, the Hilltoppers have still not lost a conference game, further strengthening their position in Conference USA placement.
WKU Soccer returns to action Sunday, Oct. 26, to play Jacksonville State at the Jax State Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
