ARLINGTON — The Cowboys offense is so prolific right now. You just hope it will mean something come December if the Cowboys can get into the postseason.

On Sunday afternoon, the Cowboys looked like a playoff team, thanks to the offense and a resurgent defense, in a 44-22 destruction of the Commanders at AT&T Stadium.

Quarterback Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes, Jake Ferguson caught two touchdown passes and CeeDee Lamb caught a 74-yard touchdown pass as two defenders ran into each other. And how can we forget about George Pickens?

The man caught four passes for 82 yards and caused another defender to get flagged for pass interference against him. That’s happened four times this season.

Oh, yes, the running game. This offensive line is so physical with starters and backups. Javonte Williams picked up his second career 100-yard game on Sunday. Williams rushed 19 times for 116 yards and a score.

On the first nine possessions of the game, spanning three quarters, the Cowboys scored on six of them.

The Cowboys have scored at least 40 points in all three of their home games. That’s happened just once in franchise history, in 1973.

“It’s great, it’s explosive, it was fun,” Prescott said. “You saw the big plays. You saw some drives put together, our standard and expectations for ourselves is very high. We understand we got guys, and the playmakers that we have, the offensive line, the love that we have for one another, you see it, just the way guys finish plays. Guys cover the ball, and (the) defense played very well tonight. When you do that more of our games will look like this.”

If you want to say play caller Brian Schottenheimer is on a roll or in a groove, that would be fair. Though the head coach was hard on himself, saying he could have called a better game in that second quarter. The Cowboys punted twice out of four possessions.

The Cowboys have produced 222 points this season after seven weeks and you begin to wonder about some team records. In 2021, that Cowboys’ offense in the second season under Mike McCarthy racked up a franchise record 530 points. In 2023, the year Prescott was second in the MVP race to Lamar Jackson, the Cowboys racked up 509 points, second-most in franchise history.

It’s fair to believe this offense is unstoppable.

Dallas gained 409 yards of total offense, marking the fourth time this season the Cowboys hit at least 400 yards of total offense. In fact, no NFL team has done that this season.

Without Lamb, who missed three games with an ankle sprain, Pickens took over, and so did reserve Ryan Flournoy with his 114-yard game in a win over the Jets.

Bring Lamb back and you see him make things happen. He just brings so much attention as an offensive threat. On his 74-yard catch and run, two defenders ran into each other trying to make a tackle as he ran untouched into the end zone. That score gave the Cowboys a 17-8 lead late in the first quarter.

After that, the game just got away from the Commanders’ defense. There was Prescott, banged up a little bit — too much for Schottenheimer’s liking —connecting on near-perfect throws to his tight end, Ferguson, who has six touchdowns this season.

And what about Prescott?

You could say he’s in the MVP conversation, but it’s hard to see him winning unless this team can overtake first place in the NFC East. In truth, the Cowboys moved into second place in the division with a road contest coming up next week against a Denver team that needed 33 fourth-quarter points to defeat the Giants on Sunday.

Prescott has thrown 13 touchdown passes with no interceptions the last four weeks. The critics are pretty quiet when it comes to whether QB1 is worth the money he’s getting and if this franchise can make a deep playoff run with him.

This offense is so special with Prescott and Schottenheimer running things.

“I thought Dak is playing really well,” Schottenheimer said. “I’m not trying to not make a big deal about him playing great. But that’s what we expect from Dak. He’s got incredible weapons.”
