Lubbock County Junior Livestock Show draws kids from around the South Plains

  • January 9, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Kids from across the South Plains are competing in the Lubbock County Junior Livestock Show this weekend at the South Plains Fairgrounds after months of preparation.

Quinn Busellato, who’s participating in the competition, said the event provides valuable agricultural education.

“I think this event teaches you a lot about agriculture and a lot of people involved in 4-H and FFA, this kind of goes with that,” Busellato said. “So, I think they all correlate and in the end it will teach you a lot of valuable lessons,” Busellato said.

Preparation for a livestock show

Sisters Preslie and Madelynn Wall both competed in the steer show. Preslie won grand champion and Madelynn won reserve champion.

Madelynn said preparation for a livestock show requires dedication throughout the year.

“During the summer you’re out there all day blowing and washing and then at night you’re out there feeding, getting them ready for shows, halter breaking them, during the summer it’s really an all-day thing,” she said.

Advice for those wanting to show livestock

Busellato encourages people interested in show animals to observe experienced competitors and stay committed to the process.

“I would say if you’re interested in stock showing, I would come out and just watch a stock show; get used to what’s going on, maybe look at some of the older kids and see what they are doing. There’s a lot of great showmen, especially in Lubbock County you can learn from,” Busellato said. “I would say the biggest thing also is to stay determined and work hard.”

The competition serves as both a learning experience and a foundation for participants’ future agricultural careers.

The livestock show has events Friday, Saturday and Sunday which will all be held at the South Plains Fairgrounds.

You will also be able to stream the events at kcbd.com or on our KCBD Connected TV App.
