EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Residents of El Paso gathered at Riverside High School on Thursday to address the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regarding Marathon Petroleum’s request to renew its air permit for the Western Refinery Plant in south central El Paso.

Marathon Petroleum emphasized that the renewal is routine, with no new construction or increase in emissions proposed.

The meeting allowed the public to ask questions and submit formal comments, with El Paso City Rep. Josh Acevedo advocating for a contested case hearing to ensure community involvement.

“The community really wants to understand how this process is working out, and that means we need to have accountability and transparency in this with the TCEQ, and to make sure that the public has meaningful participation in this,” Acevedo said.

TCEQ stated there is no timeline for a decision, but if the permit is not renewed, the refinery would be unable to operate under its current authorization.
