LUBBOCK, Texas — A healthy newborn was surrendered through a Safe Haven Baby Box at a Lubbock fire station, marking the first time the anonymous surrender device has been used in Texas.

Lubbock Fire Rescue safely received the baby at Fire Station No. 9 within the last week, officials said. The infant was found to be healthy and is now in the care of medical and child welfare professionals.

“To the mother who made this decision, thank you,” Derek Delgado, public information officer for Lubbock Fire Rescue, said. “We do not know your story, we do not know your pain, but what we do know is your heart – because you chose love, you chose safety.”

Safe Haven Baby Boxes allow parents in crisis to anonymously surrender newborns in a climate-controlled, secure container. When a baby is placed inside and the door is closed, emergency responders are automatically alerted within seconds.
