The Bobcats had their chance to end the game in regulation. Guard Kaden Gumbs drove down the floor with seconds remaining, but his last-ditch layup rolled off the rim. Gumbs and fellow Mark Drone led Texas State in scoring with 15 and 18 points, respectively. Freshman forward DJ Hall recorded 12 points and eight rebounds. Forward Tylik Weeks led Southern Miss with 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Texas State will travel Saturday to Jonesboro, Ark. to face off against Arkansas State. Here are some takeaways from their loss:
Weeks began overtime with a tip-in, and Texas State responded with two free throws from Robert Fields. However, while the Golden Eagles continued churning, the Bobcats went cold for the rest of overtime.
Southern Miss went on an 11-0 run, making 4-of-4 shots and hitting 3-of-4 free throws. Texas State’s only made shot came with 8 seconds left in the game — a second-chance layup by Hall.Â
Overall, the Bobcats went 1-for-6 from the field and 3-for-6 from the charity stripe in overtime.
After shooting 5-for-20 in the first three games of Sun Belt play, Gumbs seems to be rediscovering his touch. In his past two starts, the guard has made 11 of his 19 attempts, including 6-of-8 shooting against the Golden Eagles. The senior might’ve even scored more if he hadn’t picked up his fourth foul early in the second half.
Gumbs primarily acts as the team’s distributor (he leads the team with 66 assists), but the Bobcats need the offensive punch. Hall and Drone are the only Bobcats averaging more than 10 points, and Texas State desperately needs more players who can efficiently create their own shot.Â
Texas State still isn’t a good 3-point shooting team, and that likely won’t change unless or until guard Dimp Pernell returns. Recently, though, the Bobcats have been making an effort to space the floor.Â
They’ve shot over 20 3-pointers in three of their past four games. They’ve cracked 30% in a 100-80 loss to Troy, but the important part is that an effort is being made. If Texas State can convince teams that it can make shots from beyond the arc, the rest of the offense should flow a little more easily.
