East Lubbock Art House showcases work by incarcerated artists in new exhibition

  • January 9, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – At the East Lubbock Art House, creativity knows no boundaries. A new exhibition demonstrates that artistic expression can flourish even in the most unexpected places.

The gallery is currently displaying “Art is for Everyone,” featuring 42 works created by more than 30 artists. What makes this collection unique is that every piece was produced by individuals currently housed at the Lubbock County Detention Center.

The artists had just one month to complete their works, using whatever materials they could access within the facility.

The limited supplies led to innovative approaches, with some artists using unconventional materials to create their vision.

“They call them shades. Some of them already had their supplies and some of them use things like hair grease or jelly to make art,” said Executive Director Danielle East

The resulting collection spans multiple styles and subjects, including portraits, abstract compositions, bold graphic work and contemplative pieces that reflect personal experiences.

East emphasized that the exhibition challenges preconceptions about who can be considered an artist.

“There’s this idea that people should think about this artwork differently since it’s from people who are incarcerated, but I want people to look at this artwork the same way they looked at the last exhibit,” East said.

She noted that many participants likely created art during their school years but may have stopped as adults due to life circumstances. The program provides an opportunity to reconnect with artistic expression.

The exhibition serves as a bridge between the artists and the broader community. Organizers plan to share photos and videos of the displayed works with the creators, allowing them to see how their art is received outside the detention facility.

Visitors can participate by voting for a People’s Choice Award, with voting continuing through January 31.

The exhibition reinforces the gallery’s mission that art truly is for everyone, regardless of circumstances or background.
