Macy’s, one of the most iconic department store brands in the country, is set to shutter 14 locations in 2026, despite seeing modest growth in 2025. Among the affected stores will be the Macy’s at La Palmera in Corpus Christi.
The new round of closures marks a continuation of “a bold new chapter” Macy’s announced in February 2024 – a plan meant to revitalize the flagging company by closing about 150 “unproductive locations through 2026” while investing in 350 more profitable stores Macy’s referred to as “go-forward locations.”
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores,” Tony Spring, CEO of Macy’s Inc., said last January.
At the time, the company announced it would be closing 66 stores in 2025, including six in Texas. Those stores were located in Houston, Fairview, Plano, Southlake, Fort Worth and Flower Mound. Now, the only store in the Coastal Bend, the Macy’s at 5488 S. Padre Island Dr., Suite 5000, Corpus Christi, TX 78411, is next on the chopping block.
The La Palmera location started out as a Foley’s department store, which had been in operation since the mid-1980s. In 1985, Foley’s opened a three-story location – part of a massive expansion that included the relocation of Dillards and the construction of a parking garage. It quickly became one of La Palmera’s most important anchor stores. In the mid-aughts, the store became one of over 70 Foley’s locations to be bought and rebranded by Macy’s.

The closure of the La Palmera Macy’s comes as the company reported the best earnings in more than three years, according to financial statements Macy’s posted in December.
“Our third quarter sales were the strongest in 13 quarters, reflecting the acceleration of our Bold New Chapter strategy and demonstrating that the meaningful enterprise-wide changes we’ve made are resonating with customers,” Spring said in early December.
Macy’s currently operates 31 stores in Texas, including the next-nearest location at La Plaza Mall in McAllen, in the Rio Grande Valley, according to the company’s store locator. But already, the locator tool shows an alert for the Corpus Christi store.
“This location is closing,” reads the alert in bold red text.
