COMMERCE — East Texas A&M University squared its Southland Conference women’s basketball record at 3-3 with a 65-60 home win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Lions, now 7-6 for the season, will play again at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday against 7-6 UT-Rio Grande Valley, again in the Field House in Commerce.

To follow at about 5 p.m. in the Field House will be the men’s game pitting the 6-10 Lions against the 6-9 Vaqueros from Edinburg.

 ETAMU led for most of the women’s game though the Islanders from South Texas led 2-0, 5-2 and 9-4 in the first few minutes. The Lions took the lead for good at 10-9 on a 3-pointer by Rez Po.

The Lions led 16-10 after one quarter, 34-29 at halftime and 47-41 after three quarters.

A&M-Corpus Christi pulled to within 56-53 with 4:16 remaining after Torie Sevier banked in a layup.

Cora Horvath, who led the Lions with 21 points, hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead for the Lions, who also got a layup from Horvath and four free throws from Ahmya Boyce and Rezia Castillo in the final 1:27 to protect the Lions’ lead. Horvath was 5-of-12 from 3-point range.

Po, who was 3-of-6 from 3-point range, tossed in 13 points and handed out four assists.

Nina Horvath, also 3-of-6 from 3-point range, scored 11 points and had five rebounds.

Boyce led the Lions with six assists and the 6-2 Alva Hedrich pulled down 15 rebounds.

Sevier led the Islanders with 22 points and nine rebounds. Chelsea Wooten, a 5-9 graduate student from McKinney, scored 16 points as the Islanders dropped to 2-11 for the season and 1-5 in the conference.

UT-Rio Grande Valley, the Lions’ next opponent, is 4-2 in conference play following a 61-55 win at Northwestern State in Louisiana.

The two women’s teams have only played once with the Vaqueros winning 69-68 last season in Edinburg.

ETAMU’s men will try to break a five-game losing streak when the Lions take on the Vaqueros. The Lions lost 118-77 to Texas A&M, 75-48 to Stephen F. Austin, 69-62 to Lamar, 80-58 to Nicholls and 83-73 on Monday at New Orleans.

Ronnie Harrison, the 6-8 junior from Forney, led the Lions against New Orleans with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Damian Garcia tossed in 18 points and Vinny Sigona added 12 as the Lions dropped to 1-5 in conference play.

UT-Rio Grande Valley is  2-4 in conference play following an 80-67 win at home on Monday over Incarnate Word. Filip Brankovic, a 6-8 junior from Serbia, led the Vaqueros with 29 points and nine rebounds. Koree Cotton tossed in 23 points and Julien Gomez added 10.

The Vaqueros lead the series with the Lion men 2-0 including a 57-55 win last season in Edinburg and 85-54 in 1980.
