The Colorado Buffaloes came within inches of their biggest win at the CU Events Center in four years, narrowly losing to No. 14 Texas Tech 73-71 on Saturday.

Despite a fast start, which saw Tad Boyle’s Buffs jump out to an 8-point lead, the ranked Red Raiders quickly made their presence known by storming back and claiming the lead after 10 minutes of play. Led by JT Toppin’s double-double and Donovan Atwell’s five 3-pointers, the Red Raiders began to run away with the game, extending their lead to as much as 24 early in the second half.

Colorado struggled to shoot from beyond the arc, ending the game a grisly 6-21 from deep, which put an ice-cold freeze on the offense for much of the game. However, late in the second half, star freshman Isiah Johnson did what he does best, putting the ball through the net. Johnson would end the night as the Buffs’ leading scorer with 21 points, all of which came in the second half.

Johnson’s effort and ability to get to the free-throw line forced the Red Raiders’ stars into foul trouble, which allowed the Buffaloes to climb back into the game late. A 14-3 run late narrowed the lead as the Buffaloes continued to get to the free throw line, finishing the night 19-22 from the stripe. Barrington Hargress and Sebastain Rancik were key contributors as well, finally nailing 3-pointers and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

What killed the Buffs was their inability to rebound, outside of Bangot Dak, who grabbed 13 of them; no other Buff was able to outmatch Texas Tech’s interior size. The Red Raiders won the battle on the glass 46-36, 16 of those offensive rebound which helped the Red Raiders keep the Buffaloes out of sorts in the middle of the game.

FINAL: Texas Tech 73, Colorado 71

Texas Tech’s defense faded in the second half, but showed up on the last possession, locking down Barrington Hargress and Isiah Johnson as the Buffs looked for a game-tying shot. Colorado stormed back after trailing by as much as 24-points in this game, thanks largely to Johnson’s 21 second-half points. The Buffs fall for the first time in Big 12 Conference play to the No. 14 Texas Tech Red Raiders.

A Texas Tech turnover gave the Buffs an opportunity that Rancik didn’t miss, draining his third 3-pointer of the game to cut the Red Raiders’ lead to two points. Colorado took its final timeout before Texas Tech’s next possession; the Red Raiders have one timeout left. The Buffaloes are in the double bonus.

CU Events Center rocking during Buffs’ run – Texas Tech 66, Colorado 55 – 5:04 H2

An Isiah Johnson 3-pointer ignited the crowd at the CU Events Center in the midst of a Colorado run that saw Texas Tech’s lead shrink to as little as 8 points. Texas Tech’s offense struggled without their stars, who are dealing with foul trouble. Johnson now leads the Buffs in points and is a perfect 9-9 on free throws.

Buffs taking advantage of Red Raiders’ foul trouble – Texas Tech 61, Colorado 46 – 8:58 H2

Colorado has pivoted back to what has accelerated their offense all season: free throws, capitalizing on several fouls to go on a 12-2 run in the last five minutes. The Red Raiders’ offense has stalled after being forced to play without Lejaun Watts and Donovan Atwell, who have a combined 20 points, due to foul trouble. JT Toppin also earned his fourth foul, potentially leaving Texas Tech depleted down the stretch.

Isiah Johnson has worked his way up to nine points, while Elijah Malone ignited the Buffs’ run with a killer spin move in the post.

Red Raiders’ offense extends lead – Texas Tech 58, Colorado 34 – 13:33 H2

Texas Tech’s interior size is proving too much for the young Colorado squad to handle. Two monster dunks from the Red Raiders in the second half have silenced the CU Events Center. Sebastian Ranick knocked down the Buffs’ first 3-pointer since the first two minutes of the game, but Colorado’s offense remains stagnant and struggling on the glass, losing the rebounding battle 31-22.

Both teams sluggish to open second half – Texas Tech 50, Colorado 29 – 15:48 H2

Isiah Johnson’s first points of the game on a tough layup are the only points the Buffs have after nearly five minutes in the second half. With JT Toppin in foul trouble with three, Texas Tech didn’t fare much better shooting just 1-7 from the field in the last three minutes. Turnovers have slowly unwound Colorado and forced them to play at an unusually slow pace.

HALFTIME: Texas Tech 43, Colorado 27

The Buffs were able to hang with No. 14 Texas Tech early thanks to some miserable shooting by the Red Raiders, but after the first 10 minutes, the shoe was on the other foot. Colorado’s offense has been dreadful in the last 10 minutes of the first half, ending it on a 4:18 scoring drought. Colorado’s freshman star and leading scorer, Isiah Johnson, is scoreless, while Texas Tech’s JT Toppin has a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Colorado’s scoring woes continue – Texas Tech 40, Colorado 24 – 2:18 H1

The Buffs are in the midst of a disastrous stretch, only making two baskets in the last five minutes. The Buffaloes still haven’t made a shot from beyond the arc since the beginning of the game, and have struggled with the Red Raiders’ defense commiting three turnovers.

Red Raiders extend their lead to 12 – Texas Tech 36, Colorado 24 – 4:02 H1

Colorado is a measly 1 of their last 10 from the field and letting the game get away from them. Texas Tech has knocked down six 3-pointers as part of a 13-2 run. Texas Tech Donovan Atwell leads the game, shooting 2-5 from deep, while JT Toppin is on the verge of a double-double early.

Texas Tech claims first lead of the game – Texas Tech 27, Colorado 22 – 6:57 H1

The Red Raiders’ offense found its stride, knocking down five of their last seven shots to claim their first lead of the game. Colorado’s shooting from beyond the arc is ice cold, just 2-7 so far. Two open misses from 3-point range from Isiah Johnson slowed the Buffs’ offense significantly.

Buffs’ 3-point shooting going cold – Colorado 16, Texas Tech 14 – 11:30 H1

Courtesy of a two-minute-long 6-0 run, Colorado is clinging to an early lead. Barrington Hargress leads Colorado with 9 points on 4-5 shooting. Texas Tech’s JT Toppin has been as advertised, already putting up six points and 8 rebounds. Colorado continues to struggle to get offensive rebounds, giving the Red Raiders second chances that they’ve yet to capitalize on.

Colorado maintains early lead – Colorado 12, Texas Tech 9 – 14:11 H1

After Sebastian Rancik’s early 3-pointer, the Buffs have led every minute of a fast-paced game. Texas Tech has struggled to shoot the ball early, only 33% from the field and 1-3 from downtown. Colorado has been getting worked on the offensive glass, but keeping up the pace, leaving the Red Raiders uncomfortable.
